The region is a haven for wildlife and deer are regularly seen close by. Osprey, eagles, seals and otters can all also be spotted in the immediate area. The region is renowned for its hill walking and climbing, and the dramatic peaks of Suilven, Stac Pollaidh, Canisp, Quinag and Ben More Assynt dominate the nearby skyline of this wild and unspoilt Highland region.
There are some wonderful walking routes in the area, many of which start on foot from West Horizon. There is a local grocery shop 20 min drive away called Drumbeg stores, and 'The Jammery' in Culkein (just 6 min drive) sells refreshments, sandwiches, chutneys & jams. Flossie's Beach Store by the road in Clachtoll is just a 6 minute drive.
Lochinver, is a 8 mile drive away and provides a range of services including a Spa food shop and a butcher, doctors,post office and good quality restaurants and coffee shop. Ullapool, around 40 miles away, has a wider range of shops, a Tesco supermarket, restaurants, pubs and is also the main ferry terminus serving Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides.
The area has a unique and diverse fauna and flora, with whales, dolphins, seals, otters, basking sharks, eagles, puffins, and deer taking up residence in this wild and stunning landscape. Sunrises and sunsets can be breathtakingly beautiful. On clear nights the stars seem touchable and there is even the possibility of experiencing the northern lights with no light pollution.
