Barranca Plaza Casita - Village life in its old days Best

Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is a very charming two bedroom, one bath vacation home.
The thick adobe walls have built-in traditional nicho's. The dining area comes with traditonal banco's and throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.

A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.

In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.

The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery.
The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.

The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.

Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.
Hiking all throughout Georgia O'Keeffe's country side. Ghost Ranch, where Ms O'Keeffe had her studio, is just around the corner, Fishing in Abiquiu Lake or the Chama River, Hunting in Santa Fe and Carson National Forests (offices for obtaining permits in nearby El Rito and Espanola), Sightseeing all through the Canones Canyon and Piedra Lumbre valley, Boating and Waterskiing in Abiquiu Lake, Rafting on the Chama River. You'll find restaurants in nearby Abiquiu, El Rito, Espanola.
Each year in October - Columbus Days Weekend - Abiquiu has its Abiquiu Studio Tour. A great time to enjoy the changing colors of our cottonwood trees and art by local artists. You can visit about 60 artists in their Abiquiu studios, of which 3-5 of them are within walking distance of Barranca Plaza Casita.

The casita is heaven on earth!
The Barranca Casita is one of my favorite places on the planet. it is quiet, serene, and the casita has all the comforts of home. The Abiquiu area has such a fascinating history and there is so much to explore. The Martinez family are simply the BEST hosts. They are kind, attentive, and share such wonderful stories. We always feel like family. Thanks again for a memorable stay.

An Authentic Norther NM Experience
Floyd and his family were so kind and welcoming. Floyd started a fire in the wood stove every morning as my Girl Scout fire starting badge had lapsed. Old traditional adobe with just enough modern amenities. My dogs ran and ran and enjoyed the great outdoors. I sat in front of the fire and read a book.

This is a lovely traditional adobe home located in a slightly rural area, with a great host. The scenery is stunning with mountains in every direction and the Chama River just down the hill. Very cozy, and relaxing.

Very comfortable and cozy casita! We were warmly welcomed and would have loved to stay longer than 3 nights. The rock collection was great! The house had everything we needed and was very clean. I was glad to experience staying in an adobe casita in New Mexico!

Coming Home
Returning to the Martinez casitas is indescribable. The casita, vistas, family greetings, and location make this stay memorable. The space is spacious; the decor, furniture, lighting, kitchen supplies, and attention to detail are unparalleled. Abiquiu is very special, and the Martinez family provides an authentic experience to the State of Enhancement.

Cozy casita in a beautiful setting
We stayed three nights and were blown away by the friendliness and hospitality of the owner who lives across the plaza. He shared tomatoes and cucumbers with us from his garden. We truly felt at home. We sat outside and looked at the view of the cliffs when we ate breakfast. We will return and we wish our host and his family the very best.

Adobe Casita with a View
Great stay for the two of us. You get to experience the feeling of an adobe casita (thick walls, everything rounded including doorways and all edges. The dining nook was unique. There were great views from the front porch and patio area. The casita was spacious with lots of tile work. The location was convenient for all there is to see around Abiquiu and the price was very reasonable. Suggestions for the listing--need a better map to get you their (too many opportunities to be on the wrong road or make a wrong turn--we got lost twice, but easy once you get the correct way). Also, no door or covering on the second bedroom and must go thru the main bedroom to get to the bath (did not matter to us, but would be a surprise to others). Overall, we loved the experience! Floyd was very friendly and helpful.

Beautiful and relaxing
This beautiful location has to be one of our favorite vacation spots. Floyd and his family were very welcoming, the casita was clean and had all that we needed in it, and the views were incredible especially for a morning cup of coffee on the porch...or even an evening drink watching the sun light up different aspects of the mountain range. We plan to come back! Thank you to our hosts!

A real taste of Northern New Mexico!
If you are looking for an authentic setting in rural New Mexico, this is it. Set among rolling farmland along the Chama River you get the feeling of going back in time. Friendly kind hosts, great accomodations with everything you need to feel comfortable. My aim was to give my guests from Switzerland an genuine taste of Abiquiu, and we were not dissappointed! Floyd went out of his way to make sure we were fully informed about the area before our visit & was there for anything we might need. I will return!

Amazing Stay in the Barranca Plaza Casita
We thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent at this casita. The hosts were so hospitable and helpful. The casita itself was perfect in every way. It truely became our home for the two weeks we were there. A lot of care has been given to the casita both inside and out. It's very quiet and peaceful in the Barranca hamlet. The slower pace of life was very much appreciated. Abiquiu and surrounding areas are truly unique. So much history and tradition with family roots going back several generations makes it a wonderful place to visit. The outdoor activities and scenery are amazing. The Barranca Plaza Casita is the perfect place to stay to enjoy all that the area has to offer.

The best kept secret in the area.
We first made our reservation for seven days and then with some more days available, we were able to stay over for another three days. Thanks Floyd, for accommodating us so very well. Everything through the whole process was very easy to accomplish by phone communication. Thanks for meeting us there late. Our arrival was later than we planned due to navigation errors on our part, but with Floyd’s assistance and directions, everything worked out. This is a great place, very clean and comfortable, with all the things one could ask for. We can’t say enough about it. It was just the place to be for staying in the Abiquiu area. My wife attended a clay sculpture workshop. We got out and did some hiking. Went on the tour to Georgia O’Keffe’s home and studio. Went to Ghost Ranch. Went down to Santa Fe and over to Taos. All this is very doable staying at Casa Martinez. Definitely would go back, and would highly recommend to anyone else in the future. Looking to find a great place to stay in a great area, this is it. Many thanks to our wonderful host, we really appreciate all you did for us. All our best.

Awesome place!
Everything about this place was perfect! Floyd is an amazing host! We arrived after dark and because the house is a little hard to find in the dark, he met us at the nearby store on the main road so we could follow him to the house. The kitchen was well stocked with everything you need to prepare meals. House was super clean and Wi-Fi worked great. We traveled with our dogs and the yard is fenced and Floyd even has a pet waste can in the corner and bags for cleanup. Floyd is very hospitable and communication was great from beginning to end. Would definitely stay here again!

Magic and Comfort in Abiquiu
I had such a wonderful stay at this beautiful and comfortable casita in Abiquiu. The casita is located on top of a hill in Abiquiu and has beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. It’s a traditional adobe ancestral home and I felt so blessed to sleep within its thick adobe walls. It really felt like a little cave. I am a woman who was traveling alone and I felt so safe here. The casita was spotless, which added to my comfort. It was quiet, and I even heard the coyotes howling one night. It’s very close to the nearby Bode’s store and gas station as well as the Abiquiu Inn restaurant and magical Chama River. Communication with the property owner, Floyd, was great, and although I didn’t get to meet him, I did get to meet his mother and father. Mrs. Martinez found me lost on the road to the casita and stopped me and had me follow her to the home. We received a mild snowfall one morning and I met Mr. Martinez shoveling the sidewalks and walkways around the casita. Both are so friendly. I had a very nice conversation with Mrs. Martinez. I can’t recommend this casita enough if you’re looking for some peace and solitude. There is great Starlink wifi available, but feel free to not connect and spend some time just reflecting and enjoying the beauty of the casita and Abiquiu. Thank you, Floyd and family!

Beutiful New Mexican Casita.
My husband and I stayed here for a week in February 2023. It's a lovely, private 2-bedroom casita, spotlessly clean, and very well appointed. The owner, Floyd, and his family live across the road and they were attentive to anything we asked for. My husband unexpectedly suffered from altitude sickness (as we live normally at sea level), and the family assisted us with getting medical advice and offered to drive us to the hospital (which thankfully, was not needed). The casita is about 2 miles (3 km.) down a small country road and is very quiet. It is close to Abiquiu, where many artists live, and to Ghost Ranch, the former home of the great artist, Georgia O'Keeffe. There is an excellent restaurant in the village, as well as a gas bar and a small general store. We will return.
