The National Forest of Vimeiro, with 267 hectares, is wooded in an area of 247 hectares, with maritime pine as the main species (60% of the area of the Forest), followed by eucalyptus (8% of the area, destined for the production of wood from quality) and cork oak (6% of the Mata area). It also has a remarkable patch of Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea subsp. broteroi), with an area of about 20 hectares which, together with the fountain of Pena da Gouvinha and the Picnic Parks, create a natural landscape of rare beauty. At the level of the shrub layer there are strawberry trees, heather, gorse, but also some acacias and brambles. Close to the ground we find some aromatic herbs and a great diversity of mushrooms. The most typical fauna is the red squirrel, the mongoose, the wild boar, the round-winged eagle and the jay. The route allows you to appreciate the unique environmental heritage of the region, both due to the size of the forest area and the species that make it up.
There is a marked route available in the Mata Nacional do Vimeiro that allows nature lovers to discover this immense environmental heritage in a safe way.
