Holiday To Bendigo
If you threw a dart at a map of Victoria and landed a bullseye, you’d hit Bendigo. Speaking of Bendigo, we’re kind of thinking you should go there.
This city is reinventing itself in more ways than one: It’s got an emerging food scene that will excite even the staunchest of foodies, and wait until you get a look at some of the renovated historic buildings, like the old prison that’s being turned into a 1,000 seat-theatre. Browse Wotif to book a Bendigo holiday and discover something new down under!
Things to Do in Bendigo
The first thing you should do when you arrive is to get a vehicle from Wotif’s Bendigo car hire options and go exploring. Head over to the Golden Dragon Museum and learn about the Chinese cultural roots that have been planted here for many years. Some of the items in the gallery’s collection include Qin Dynasty coins and Zhou Dynasty knife money—yes, an old form of currency was knives. The most impressive pieces on display, though, are the imperial dragons. Supposedly these are the longest and oldest of their kind in the world, and it’s easy to believe when you get a look at Sun Loong, a fire-breather over 100 metres in length.
If you want to strike it rich during your holiday in Bendigo, descend into the depths of the Central Deborah Gold Mine. Dress up in overalls, boots and a hard hat with a headlamp, and fire up a mine drill in search of the best nuggets on a gold tour. You’ll be able to go 85 metres underground, explore the old tunnels and get a sense of the miner’s way of life. Remember, finders keepers, losers weepers!
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
When you’re done counting the money you saved from our cheap Bendigo packages, you should take it on a spending spree. Head for Hargreaves Mall in the business district and check out a ton of hip clothing boutiques and souvenir shops. If you’re looking for handmade goods, make your way to Bendigo Pottery and get a whole new dinnerware set.
You won’t have to go far from the downtown district to find good grub after shopping. There’s a wide variety of places serving up plates of food ranging from pad Thai to chicken Marsala. Have you ever wanted to enjoy a multi-course meal with wine pairing on the side? There’s a handful of restaurants downtown that will set up a delicious combination for you, and we highly recommend you pay a visit to one during holidays to Bendigo.
After the sun dips below the horizon, head over to The Capital. No, not Canberra. The Capital is the city’s main performing arts centre and plays host to a number of live shows throughout the year. Try to get in when someone is rocking out on the didgeridoo and see how long they can hold a single note. Some players have been known to go non-stop for 40 minutes!
What’s Next?
Just because we can’t go with you doesn’t mean you can’t take a getaway yourself. Browse our stellar offers on Bendigo holiday packages and book one today. Really, you should’ve done it yesterday, but we’ll let it slide.
