Cliffside Log Cabin w/ Large Deck for Enjoying Spectacular Views & Wildlife

This authentic log home, constructed in the early 1990s, is stunningly located on the edge of a cliff in the mountain residential community of Wilderness Ranch, just 24 miles northeast of Boise off of Highway 21 on the way to historic Idaho City. The house has almost 1,500 sq. feet of deck on three sides that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside dotted with Ponderosa pines and populated by a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and fox.

The cabin features a cathedral great room incorporating a fully outfitted retro kitchen, a six-person dining room table, a large kitchen island that can seat four, and a living room with a wood-burning fireplace (which you are free to use, but you must bring your own firewood). Two sets of glass French doors open to the deck. Also on the main floor is a full bathroom with a double vanity, shower and jetted tub (not a hot tub!), all original to the house; a master bedroom with a queen bed and glass sliding-door access to the deck; and a second bedroom with one full bed and one twin. Please note, however, that there is currently no accessible clothes washer or dryer.

From the main floor, a log stairway leads to a large loft, which features another full bath (shower only) and a full-size bed. You'll also find there a collection of several hundred movie videos and DVDs for your viewing pleasure on the flat screen TV in the living room! Because the loft has log railings with large gaps that present falling hazards, this area is not suitable for unsupervised small children.

Wilderness Ranch has privately maintained dirt roads and the road leading to the cabin is narrow and steep in some places. While a two-wheel drive vehicle is fine for accessing the cabin most of the year, we highly recommend a four-wheel drive vehicle with studded snow tires and/or chains during the months when there is likely to be significant snow on the mountain (November through March). There can be significant climatic differences between Boise and Wilderness Ranch. Even when there is no snow on the ground in Boise, the roads at the ranch can be snow covered and icy. Also during periods of heavy rain (spring and fall), the roads can become muddy and difficult to transverse.

Please note that as an authentic log cabin, with exposed log interior walls, in a wilderness area, there more issues with dust and insects than a regular house. In the fall (September/October) when the temperatures drop, we have challenges with wasps trying to get into the cabin, notwithstanding that we employ an exterminator. So if the sight of a wasp or insect in the house would bother you, this is not the vacation rental for you!

Be aware that cell phone coverage at the ranch is spotty or not available at all. However, the house does have a landline phone.

Final note: The map may show Bogus Basin ski area as close-by, but those roads are not open in winter. To get to Bogus Basin, you need to drive into Boise and then back out. Trip takes about 90 minutes.

Lovely views
It's in a lovely location, and the directions to find it were perfect (follow them). We loved the morning walks in the neighborhood and the quiet. We know we were warned it was a rustic cabin, but the bugs were annoying (even though the bug company was just there), and one mattress should be replaced. According to a log cabin builder, the exterior needs to be sealed again to prevent the bugs.

Unclean, Wasps and Bugs, No Cell Reception
The place was unclean meaning it was poorly cleaned and looked like it might have been cleaned a month prior then left to sit. hair on the bath towels and hair left in the shower. Dead bugs on the beds. The place had clearly been left to sit for a long time before we arrived. There were over 20 wasps flying around the house and 1000s of other small black bugs. There was no cell service at the house, they didnt tell us until after booking. No hottub in the house that was falsely advertised. We stayed about 2 hours and then left. Asked for a refund by they only offered half back after much effort and heart ache.

Quiet Getaway
If you are looking for a nice quiet secluded spot for a getaway, this is it. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at this beautiful Log Home. It had everything you need in the kitchen and was peaceful and quiet.

Fantastic weekend!
We stayed here after a 5 day backpacking trip in the Sawtooth Wilderness. It was the perfect place to unwind and relax. The house was clean and communication was great. We didn’t have any problems with a 2 wheel drive rental car, but definitely see how it could be an issue in winter months. We took an evening drive and saw so many turkeys, elk, and deer!

Perfect Place to Unwind
This place was awesome!!! The location up on the cliff makes you feel like you are in your own private world. We opted out of the long day trips to stay and enjoy relaxing on the deck. I will definitely recommend this place to others.

Quiet weekend away
My husband and I stayed here for a little anniversary weekend away. It was quiet, had everything we needed to cook, and beautiful views. Two things for future guests: the listing says basic soaps. I should have clarified before we stayed…there was only hand soap in the bathrooms. You will need to bring your own body soap and shampoo. Thankfully we had some of our own. Also, if you plan to do much online…don’t. The WiFi isn’t powerful enough to do a whole lot. However! This is a cabin for getting away. We loved the 100’s of vhs movies. It was like stepping back in time and reliving our youth. Would recommend for some romantic alone time.

Clean and great view. Make sure you have an all wheel drive/4 wheel drive vehicle. WiFi Internet was sufficient, but TV wasn’t able to access Internet. So, not able to watch streaming apps. Enjoyed the view immensely!!!

Beautiful location
My wife and I wanted a cabin in the woods with a view and privacy and this cabin was perfect. We fell victim to the Southwest Airlines debacle over Christmas 2022 and Bill was very kind and gracious to be flexible with our rebooking. We stayed from 1/2-1/7 of 2023. A few notes: We are from the Gulf South and not familiar with winter driving conditions. When the listing says you need snow tires or chains, you do. There was about 3’ of snow around from the previous week and the driveway into the house is steep. The driveway was plowed, but with the weather we had it thawed some then refroze and the chains we picked up were necessary. It was a 4WD truck so I think that’s very helpful in that situation. Not necessarily sure how you’d rent that sort of thing from a typical agency so we used Turo which I highly recommend. Mandy, the property manager, was very helpful and responsive with a couple of things but mostly with my questions as a southerner and advice on getting in and out of the cabin. I don’t want to mislead anyone, I’m sure this was just typical stuff, but for me it was new and if you’re not familiar with mountain roads in the snow I’m writing this to you. Her help was well appreciated. I was concerned about a couple reviews mentioning bugs as wasps. Bill and Mandy were very open about what they have done to combat that and I appreciate it, but in the end, you’re in a legit log cabin in the woods. We had just a few small moths and had a visit from a stink bug that I just let go on his way. If you want something more akin to Sheetrock and instantaneous central heat, that’s a different rental. (There are baseboard heaters that kept us perfectly warm when it was as low as 11°F, they just take a little longer to warm up the house but totally adequate) This place was perfect for what we wanted.
