Spend a day exploring one of Thailand's most amazing Khmer archaeological sites, Phanom Rung. It's over a thousand years old and built on an ancient volcano. Follow the grand stairway from the foot of the hill to the top, marvelling at the elaborately designed sanctuary buildings. As you reach the main pagoda you will notice the exquisite Hindu designs, all telling a story of the gods. Follow the story of the ancient people who built the temple, originally a Hindu religious site. Other Khmer ruins in the area are less well-preserved. For a taste of nature the Bird Park (Suan Nok) is a wildlife reservation based around the Huai Talat reservoir. During Thailand's dry season (November-April) come and see both local and migratory birds visiting from colder countries. The Lower North-Eastern Cultural Centre is a local historical study centre, so come for a look at the locally woven cloths, pottery and Chinese ceramics that have been discovered in Buriram. There are many artifacts on display, giving an insight into the ancient community that has dwelled here for thousands of years.
