Property Manager Nightmare
Well, before our stay started the owner had contacted me asking me to cancel my reservation on VRBO and book directly through him. He stated it would save me money, I did find this odd but didnt think much of it. We first pulled up to the house thinking it looks great, it had an amazing location. The house is older so it had the charm of an older home. It could have been cleaner, that wasn’t a big issue for us. We did quickly realize that there were little things not working. We contacted the property owner/ manager about two unworking tv’s and a lack of pilot light on a gas fireplace, asking for help. It was a wet rainy day and we had already passed time by playing cards. He suggested we wait till tomorrow, I had asked for him to help me troubleshoot the problem and he starts calling me a Katen, ignorant and entitled. He attempts to tell me I must vacate immediately and he is going to call the sheriff. I had to spend 1.5 hours on the phone with VRBO to get this resolved. He is a problem host, and ge had no right to threaten us since we did not break the contract. After we proved HE had broken the contract by not providing a safe environment for us to stay in VRBO provided us with a full refund and released us from our reservation. I know owner is going to reply to this comment with hostility just like he has all the other reviews he did not like. You may not have any issues... but if you do... you do not want to deal with this man.

Beautiful, Peaceful Getaway
The location of this rental could not be much better. Views from the house and deck were spectacular and walking along the shore each day was a treat. Two areas to review: We definitely could have used more dinner plates as there there only 7 and some nights we needed plates for serving as well at dinner. Upstairs bedroom door would not stay closed, had to wedge a washcloth in the door jam to keep it closed.

Nice place but..
Would I stay there again? Yes. The location was great and having the beach right there was perfect. The price per night was right for two families splitting the bill. Here are some concerns we had. 1. Limited dinnerware and utensils. Bring extra plates for family bigger than 4. 2. The master bedroom on the first floor had spackle all over the walls that were not shown in the photos. It's not too big of a deal, but it appears that the finishing work was halted. The window in this room was not able to close once opened. So we had to go outside to shut it at night. 3. The instruction book stated that we had to remove all bedding and place it into bags. We did not feel that this was our job, but we did. However, we were not able to find enough bags for the amount of laundry that was there. 4. We ere not able to adjust the heat up. The crazy winds for two days had the screen door coverings moving with leaking air, Even with the fireplace going it was cold in the morning at 66 degrees with the drafts inside. Overall, for the location and price for two families, not a bad place, and would consider staying again. It was "clean" but could use a thorough deep cleaning.

Incredible beach location
Our group of 10 enjoyed the private beach and proximity to activities in the Keweenaw peninsula. The house was tight for 10, and wasn't really setup for more than 6. It would be good to have place settings and seating to accommodate everyone in the group. The house could use some TLC - a thorough cleaning, repairs to doors and windows, paint, and furniture. It was not clear that the outdoor space is shared with several other rentals - though the other guests were great, and it wasn't a problem. A toilet in an unfinished stone basement with steep stairs and no handrail is generally not considered a "bathroom," this is a two bath house. The owner promptly provided missing bedding and towels. The sunsets on the beach were amazing.

Wonderful home for our family!
What an amazing location on the shores of Lake Superior. We loved our spot on the shoreline and were happy to find Yooperlites each evening. The firepit on the deck provided two nights of pure Michigan fun! My parents, grandmother, sister, nephew, and kids enjoyed the perfect weekend in this ideal home. We all traveled North to celebrate my oldest son's graduation from Michigan Tech. The house was clean and with 5 bedrooms, had all the space we needed. We ate breakfast each morning enjoying the sound of Lake Superior waves. We found great lunch options in Calumet and enjoyed takeout pizza from Calumet Works, a delicious dinner at Michigan House Cafe & Brewpub, and a graduation celebration dinner at Carmelitas, complete with thimbleberry margaritas. Delicious UP coffee was provided along with many other fun delights. The MTU colored and themed flowers on the table were the very best surprise! The owners are caring and the sweet message they left for us was heartfelt. Everything they did and provided only added to our celebration. We truly do hope to venture back often and with our second son starting at MTU in the fall, I'm certain we'll be back!

The entire family from our 1 year old granddaughter all the way to my 72 year old husband loved the cottage and location. Quiet, beautiful view of Lake Superior and fantastic rock hunting. Close enough for short day trips to Copper Harbor to Houghton. Would love the owners to include some history on the McNaughton Cottage. Great time. Would highly recommend.

The view is superb!!
If you are looking for a secluded getaway with direct access to Lake Superior's majestic shoreline, time with family spent in an accommodating kitchen and cozying up to gaze at a cozy fireplace -- this is the place for you. We were able to gather our whole family for dinner - 14 people at the kitchen table -- such a nice blessing as we all congregated from different states.

Great location, plenty of space for gathering
excellent location on lake superior, beautiful sunsets and night skies, Place listed three bathrooms but one was a half bath in unfinished basement with steep stairs which no one wanted to use. Pet friendly, and overall pretty clean but we had issues with the garbage disposal/dishwasher not working and property owner said he'd put on the list to fix for next guest vs fixing it for us. The farm table was very sticky and dirty, we tried scrubbing with clorox wipes but never quite got it clean.. I think it needs deep cleaning and sealing... sort of like eating on outdoor picnic table with years of grime and dirt. Indoor and Outdoor gas fireplace was nice, but had to call to get propane tanks. Firewood for beach firepit also a special request, and was told to look for driftwood on beach? Other VRBO's we used typically provide firewood, but was appreciated of firewood provided next day so we could experience fire on beach on dark sky. Overall very great but place is in need of TLC and repairs, windows hard to open, blinds and door wall screen need replacing, etc.

Family Reunion
We had a mini reunion with my siblings to inter our parents’ ashes. We were supposed to do it in 2020 but had to cancel due to Covid-19. My daughter and her family and my husband and I stayed in this cottage. It was perfect for our family! All of the kids got to have their own bedroom, which they were delighted about! It had everything we needed. Plenty of room at the kitchen table for my whole family. The deck was big enough for all of us to be together. We had a wonderful time and would definitely come back again!

The home was very beautiful , spacious and clean. Our family of 5 only used the main level and had plenty of space. The views of Lake Superior were absolutely stunning. Communication with Phillip was outstanding-he responded very quickly to all questions. We managed to lock ourselves out of the home and also came over very quickly with a smile and spare key. Highly recommended home!

Perfect getaway
We loved our stay at MacNaughton's Retreat. The house is exactly as the pictures and very comfortable! Amazing views of Lake Superior and great location on the peninsula as a jumping off point for exploring. Cottages are grouped together to create a little village of sorts but spaced far enough apart with walls and landscaping to allow privacy. Phillip and Sara are very welcoming and responsive for any questions you might have. Super close to Calumet for groceries, etc. but far enough away to feel remote. Perfect getaway for Labour Day weekend and we will certainly be back!

Week long small family get-a-way
Our family very much enjoyed our time here! Plenty of space both inside and out for our small family to play and have their time to themselves as well. We loved the close proximity of the lake/rock beach. The only thing to note is while there is AC in the house, it is a wall unit on the main level. If you have people sleeping upstairs (which we did not), it might get a little hotter up there. Normally this is not a problem as it doesn't get that hot along the shore anyway...we just happened to have a couple of hotter days during our stay. Over-all...mutliple family members have requested that we come back to this same spot next year!

Beautiful sunsets, nice flat lawn for games, nice deck, well-equipped kitchen. Beach access was good, fire pit was great. Local brewery in Calumet nearby was excellent (I think it was called Michigan Pub). It was very hot and windows would not open (many without screens); many non-working lightbulbs (in fairness, we did not contact owner to request any). Was not clear from description that there are cottages right behind and adjacent to this one and beach is shared. Also, 3rd bathroom is in unfinished basement (we did not use, though we appreciated the use of laundry down there). We were fortunate to have quiet neighbors but our peaceful retreat could have been much different. We contacted owner x2 prior to trip with question about internet connectivity and received no reply.

Beautiful Sunset Every Night
This home was perfect for 5 of us to have a get away into the U.P. this fall. We each had our own room with plenty of room in the living room and outside area for fun things. The kitchen is perfect with a very big table - as usual, all of the fun events happened there - cards, dice, food, drinks, laughs. And the sunsets - every night even when it looked cloudy resulted in a beautiful sunset. This home is perfect for a big family get-away/reunion or a group of friends having fun.

Wonderful 60th Anniversary trip!
We stayed at MacNaughton's Retreat as a 60th anniversary celebration for my parents for 7 days and 6 nights in August. We had 10 people and 3 dogs and were very comfortable. We could all sit together around the large kitchen table, in the large living room, on the deck and patio and even around the firepit by the lake. Philip, our VRBO Superhost, was very responsive and took care of a minor hot water problem as soon as he could and helped us use the electric sauna. There was a nice size yard for the dogs to play. I would describe this location as somewhat secluded although there are 3 other cottage rentals nearby. We used the newer kayaks on a calm day on Lake Superior and had some beautiful bonfires on cloudless, star-filled night skies. It was close enough to Calumet, sightseeing and visiting family in Copper Country. We had very good wi-fi service, but no cell service (we got it easily when we went to Calumet). There were so many things to do, we rarely even turned on the flat screen TV. We would love to stay there again in the future and highly recommend the property and VRBO Superhost, Philip Roberts!
