Every visitor needs to try the fantastic street food in Changsha. Snake Alley is the most famous place to sample the local delights, so be prepared for some spicy and unique treats! Don't pass up the choudofu (stinky tofu) or the spicy crayfish when it's caught locally in the summer months - both are delicious.
Stop in at Tangerine Island, which is known to the locals as Ju Zi Zhou. It's a massive park between the main city and Hunan University. Grab a cab and go hang out in the lush gardens, and don't miss the chance to take a photo with a giant sculpture of Mao. Keep walking to Hunan University and try the excellent cafes and restaurants, and don't miss the second sculpture of Mao Zedong on the campus itself.
If you're looking for adventure you need to explore Yuelu Mountain on the Xiang River. It's the best spot for a picnic, and as you climb higher you’ll get a fantastic view from the peak. During Autumn this location is beautiful, with tangerines growing on the trees and maple leaves turning a brilliant red.
Back in town stroll down Taiping Street and visit the poet and educator Jia Yi's former residence, which is now a museum. Nearby, Yuela Academy is a thousand year old centre of culture. Take some time to wander through the grounds, and check out the pavilions and the Confucius Temple, which are absolutely stunning in their design.
