The lion inn is a charming old pub with a pretty garden and we had an okay stay. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was clean , food was good, and our room was quiet. However, the property is tired, the shower was tricky, carpet had stains and the wifi didn’t work. Staff were underwhelming and we felt it was overpriced .

No electricity
The room itself was beautiful and the breakfast was good, however…we had no electricity in our room (no plugs, no TV etc.). We did not realise this until we can home from a wedding by which point reception was closed. I therefore called the reception in the morning and politely asked if they could send someone to take a look - the answer was no because she was working alone and didn’t know what was wrong because the switchboard looked fine. I said fair enough but what time will someone be able to look, she was unable to provide an answer. I understand this is a small pub with a small team but if you are charging £225 for one night, you expect to have electricity or be offered an alternative room or a partial refund.

A lovely 1 night stay at The Lion. Just me and my dog - they are very welcoming to dogs. Room was clean and warm with good quality toiletries and tea/coffee. Bed was very comfortable. I had dinner in the evening which was excellent. The dining area had a friendly, lively atmosphre and the pub in general is a perfect old-style place with good beers on tap but also a gastro-pub style menu and wine list. Breakfast in the morning was also just as you would want it - I had the full English which set me up very well for the day. Took a walk up to Belas Knap Long Barrow and then Cleeve Hill - both highly recommended if you want to tire your dog out and get some magnificent views yourself! I only saw the town/village when everything was closed but it looked like it would be well worth a stroll round - I would have liked to stay to browse the second hand bookshop (I tihnk it's called Books & Ink) but sadly did not have time. Really good stay - I hope to return.

My husband and I spent Christmas at the Lions Inn. The manager and staff, (cheers to our delightful breakfast server) were so professional, kind, and joyful. Lion Inn was a magical place to celebrate the holiday. Excellent room, food, and hospitality and staff.

The hotel has a warm friendly atmosphere however there were issues with room 9, the heating wasn’t working and the electric sockets kept tripping out and eventually we had to move rooms late at night. There was no coffee in the second room and we had to raid room 9 for some coffee, good job we still had the key! We were attending a family funeral in the morning and specifically asked what time breakfast was. We were told 8.00 am and as we were due to leave for the funeral at 9 this seemed okay. However at 8 in the morning were told breakfast was not until 9. We ordered something simple. Scrambled egg and bacon butty as we did not want impose on the helpful staff that were in early. The staff did make every effort to help but it took the shine off the stay. Not helpful when information given the night before was not accurate.

The hotel claimed not to have received the message I sent via Expedia in response to their question on when I would be checking in. I had asked for early check in for a wedding. The member of staff was quite rude when I explained I had messaged them with this request and was disappointed the room was not ready. I had to change in the pub toilets. When I explained that we would be back late from the wedding the key to my room was conveniently available. That aside the room was very nice and breakfast was great, although we could not get any water out of the shower the following morning which was disappointing for the price paid. The room faced the road and it was quite noisy from 7.00.

More of a whimper than a roar
The Lion Winchcombe. There are a number of issues with this hotel. The checkin seems a bit casual and offhand. There is no credit card authorisation to cover any extras. Most of the staff are delightful but some are very offhand at times However, it’s a quaint real-feel local pub with a good restaurant and some rustic hotel rooms and serves a fine breakfast. These further comments relate to our experience of room 2. The challenges of bathroom access (low ceiling and step entry) are clearly products of the age of the building, which is also part of its charm, of course. However these features might be a serious physical challenge to some and this could be made clearer at the time of booking. There are some issues of substantive concern in a hotel of this star rating. The liquid stain on the carpet in the room, the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke when you enter the room, the mould in the shower, the leaking toilet cistern when flushed, the TV remote control that periodically loses contact with the TV and the battery cover for the remote that falls off every time you pick it up and which we eventually had to fix with a Band-Aid. Because of the rooms location over the bar it is pretty noisy at night until after 11pm. Would I go to the lion for dinner and a beer if I was trapped in Winchcombe for a day…yes definitely. Would I choose to stay in room 2, not so much.

Top notch
Really lovely hotel, well kept and clean. Was very pleasantly surprised to find a cafetière and ground coffee in my room, that’s a rare gem. The pub is very popular and I understand why, it has great food (lovely breakfast) and five star service. My only note would be that some rooms are right by the outside pub garden so may have some noise but the room seemed to block out most of it. I was fine with noise levels but maybe check where the room is before booking if you need complete silence. I can’t fault the place at all, was excellent.
