The staff were extremely welcoming, but clearly had not the adequate training both in the bar area (didn't know what a Viognier was even though on the wine menu, inability to open a bottle of wine with a cork. I was asked, having orexered a bottle of wine with a cork, would you like it opening? I had to send my evening main back as it was completely cold, as was the breakfast the following morning. We will NEVER return nor recommend.

Great value stay
Enjoyed our stay here whilst visiting Stanhope. Room and public bedroom corridor areas were overly-warm however, which can’t be good for “eco friendliness”. Staff were polite, friendly and welcoming. We ate in the dog-friendly bar one night, which was pretty busy with a few loud and lairy customers. Our second night dining experience in the upstairs bistro restaurant was superb! Really enjoyed the quality and service upstairs. We made us of the spa/pool area which was really quite tired and in need of some TLC, with abandoned swimsuits left on the changing room floor, locker doors hanging off, and gutters blocked and overflowing.

Stayed at the Derwent Manor 3-7 Aug 2024. Room and food were all satisfactory. However our stay was overshadowed by worrying health & safety (H&S) issues. My elderly aunt had the lift doors abruptly close in on her, pinning her arms between them. There seemed to be a fault with the sensors & she suffered a deep laceration to her arm. The first aider at the hotel attended quickly to clean & dress the wound & filled up the H&S accident form. Upon returning home shortly afterwards the wound began throbbing & one of my aunt’s fingers became stiff. She went to her local A&E where medical (honey type) dressings were applied was given a tetanus injection. She was advised the wound will take a long time to heal. District nurses are currently visiting her at home to re-dress as necessary. I wrote to the hotel to update them of this on 15 Aug & requested assurance the lift will be fully examined by maintenance staff. To date they have failed to reply WHICH WE FIND VERY DISAPPOINTING. If you are booking this hotel be aware the lift (there is only one in the main building for guest use) is a hazard especially to any frail elderly persons and probably children also. I would not use it if I had to visit the hotel again but am able-bodied so can take the stairs. Others may have no choice. Given this is a popular wedding venue the hotel has a high turnover of guests & I would hope they so something positive to urgently make the lift safe.

Bathroom was lovely bright modern and clean, just surprised there was no handrail/safety grip fitted as standard to ensure safety getting into and out of bath/shower. I do not have mobility problems but it is easy for anyone to over balance or slip climbing in and out of a bath particularly if soap etc makes bath slippery.

Everything was great, the only issue we had was there was a wedding going on the same night we were there and our 2 rooms were directly under the ballroom where the wedding reception was. Music kept us all up til midnight. It would have been 5 stars all the way otherwise

We got upgraded to one of the cottages due to us having 2 children and there being a wedding function on, which was excellent. Beautiful cottage, really comfortable beds. Really nice touch. We went to the leisure centre twice to use the pool, fantastic although a little outdated and gets quite busy. They had a bouncy castle for the kids to use which was great. Food in the antler was quite slow to come, im assuming due to the wedding party. There didnt seem to be enough staff on to clear tables and serve behind the bar, and there was one particularly rude behind the bar. Breakfast was good. Beautiful surroundings. Didnt see much inside the hotel due to staying in the cottage. Lovely 1 night stay.

Very relaxing break & made to feel welcome.
Luxurious well appointed rooms with good soundproofing. Beautiful rural location with open countryside views. Every member of staff we encountered over our 3 night stay was exceptionally friendly, helpful and so obviously knew their respective roles, despite being very young. Refreshing. Nothing was too much trouble for them. There was adequate parking and the whole site seemed very safe. Three things which would have made our stay 100% perfect - Choice of herbal teas in the bedroom. Choice of milks at breakfast - dairy and non dairy. More information for potential guests regarding the rooms/floors which the few lifts service as I did find the long stair and sets of 3/4 steps dotted around the building a challenge. Had I known about the abundance of steps on booking I could have requested a more accessible room.
