General information
The Giant Mountains is a mountain range on the border between the Czech Republic and Poland. It is part of the Sudetes. The mountains are named after the giant Rübezahl who lives there
The highest mountain is the Sněžka located in the Czech Republic. This is 1603 meters above sea level. The Elbe River starts as a small stream in the Giant Mountains on the Czech side. The north side supplies its water to the Bobr that flows into the Oder. The Giant Mountains can thus be seen as a watershed between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. It is the smallest high mountain in Europe with a very extreme climate. This is caused by the fact that the land and sea climate often affect the high mountains simultaneously. Even the tree line is considerably lower here than in the Alps. The vegetation on the peaks is characterized by an alpine and subalpine vegetation. Large parts of the Giant Mountains are part of the Krkonoskí Narodní Park, whose headquarters are located in Vrchlabí. Since the end of the 1990s, the Czech part in particular has become increasingly well-known among Western tourists. In the winter it is a popular winter sports area and in the summer people come because of nature. The bare granite tops of the many mountains are impressive. Most formations have their own, appropriate name.
Important places in the Giant Mountains are Karpacz, Szklarska Poręba (Poland), Špindlerův Mlýn, Trutnov, Vrchlabí and Harrachov (Czech Republic)
