Accommodation In Forbes
Relive the golden days with a holiday in Forbes, a country town in Central NSW rich in gold mining history and famous for being the site of the biggest gold robbery in Australia. And this is before we get started about its connection to some of the wildest bushrangers in history and beautiful heritage buildings! Want to learn more? Then book a Forbes hotel and get ready for a trip back in time.
Forbes is a pretty little town that sits along the Lachlan River amid green trees, lush farmland and classic architecture, which all give the area a distinctive country charm. Soak in the atmosphere as you stroll along the streets and explore the remnants of the town’s past. The perfect place to get started is on the Forbes Heritage Walk, which visits 18 sites around town. Notable sites include the Town Hall, a grand, white building framed by arched windows that’s used for mayoral functions and balls, and Victoria Park, a small park with a carved stone fountain and a cast iron rotunda still used for musical performances. For something a bit more unusual, head to Forbes Cemetery to see the grave of Ben Halls, one of Australia’s most infamous bushrangers who was linked with hundreds of robberies in NSW, including the country’s largest gold robbery, where he and his crew made off with 14,000 pounds worth of gold and money.
Once you’ve had your fill of history, take a trip to Lake Forbes, a tranquil lagoon perfect for a family day out. Brought your bike? Take it for a ride on the cycling tracks around the lake. What about the kids? Let them frolic at the free water park before unpacking a picnic and watching swans and other wildlife that call the area home. For more wildlife spotting away from the heart of town, Gum Swamp Bird Hide is only 4km from the city but with its foggy marshes, still water and bare trees, it feels like it’s worlds away. Here you can see over 150 species of birds and small animals, such as black swans, herons, sea eagles, quails and songlarks.
The sights in Forbes may be wonderful, but the trip there offers scenery that is just as sweet. Travel via train, coach or road through the heart of Central NSW (about five hours from Sydney) and see rolling hills, acres of green farmland, rugged cliffs and mountains and pristine lakes. So wot are you waiting for? Check out our Forbes accommodation and get ready for an adventure!
