Accommodation In Golden Triangle
In the far north of Thailand, the Golden Triangle is the name given to the area where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand meet. Experience beautiful and remote jungle, local hill-tribe villages, and the history of a region once well known for its opium production. Today the Golden Triangle is now a definite tourist destination. Book your Golden Triangle accommodation, and take a trip to explore one of Thailand's most notorious yet serene destinations.
For your first stop, head to the temple Wat Phra Tat Doi Pu Khao, which is right by the riverside and dates back to the early 8th century. There's not much of the actual temple remaining, just a small chapel and some crumbling stupas. What makes this a great spot however is the view it offers over the Golden Triangle. You're elevated on a hill and have a perfect view across the river, mountains and the point where three countries connect.
The Hall of Opium in town is a fantastic museum to check out. Detailing the history of opium around the world, you learn how it was produced, the effects of smoking it, as well as the local campaigns that are eradicating this crop. You can even have a look at a real opium plantation which they have growing in the museum to help educate visitors. Quite close by is another museum, the House of Opium. This one is privately run and displays a wide range of paraphernalia. Compared to the Hall of Opium the private museum has a much more serious tone, and is definitely worth a visit.
Head to the riverfront and take your photo at the gate marking the entrance to the Golden Triangle. There are lots of opportunities for great photos by the river, with a giant golden Buddha sitting atop a treasure ship, elephant statues, and many elaborate shrines dedicated to the royal family. Hop on a boat and cross to a small island in the river called Don Sao. It belongs to Laos, but no visa is required for the trip. There's a market and lots of stalls to buy a huge range of souvenirs for your friends back home.
Heading south towards Chiang Rai, there are many local hill tribe villages surrounded by lush tropical jungle. Stop in and visit the long-neck Karen, colourful Yao and many other local villages. This is the perfect spot to jump on an elephant and take a tour of the beautiful jungle.
Just 317km north of Chiang Mai, the Golden Triangle is a fantastic destination where you can leave Thailand without your passport and get back in again! In a region full of history and spectacular nature, find a Golden Triangle hotel and a flight to Chiang Mai for your next trip to Thailand. What's stopping you from experiencing this wonderful region for yourself?
