Accommodation In Great Barrier Island

Do you ever wish you could escape the noise of modern life? A short break on New Zealand’s Great Barrier Island means you can escape civilisation for a while and enjoy the simpler things in life. Beware: travellers enter Great Barrier Island at their own risk of falling in love with the relaxed atmosphere and never wanting to return to modern life on the mainland. Great Barrier Island was named by Captain James Cook and is famous for its beautiful mountains, ocean views, beaches and farmland, as well as its laid back atmosphere and old fashioned charm. Oh, and it’s also famous for the fact that all of the electricity on the island is powered by generators or solar and wind power, which means there are no street lights and a limited amount of gadgets and gizmos. Our Great Barrier Island accommodation will help you get back to basics and enjoy the good life, beach-side.

The peaceful atmosphere of Great Barrier Island offers an inspirational haven for artists, poets and musicians. You can view the artworks of some of the local artists on the Art Discovery Trail. There are plenty of opportunities for mountain biking, boating, hiking, bushwalking, horse riding and stand up paddle boarding on the island. You can also head to the GBI Sports Club for a game of football, tennis, cricket, table tennis or darts. Hit the green at the local golf course or go on a fishing or diving charter tour. There's a good chance you'll spot some whales, orca and dolphins while you're out on the water. While you're in town, make sure you visit the Milk, Grain and Honey Museum, which houses a quirky collection of local artefacts and old photos. The Kaitoke Hot Springs is also a popular spot because of its unique undeveloped springs, plus its beautiful wetland and mountain views. If you're on the island in January, you'll enjoy the Great Fitzroy Mussel Fest, with an endless supply of mouth-watering mussels, live entertainment, arts and crafts, and local produce.

With a population of only 800 locals, Great Barrier Island isn't exactly a shopping destination. You can pick up essentials at the general stores though, and you can grab a bite to eat at the local cafes and takeaway shops, or tuck into a bistro meal at the Irish pub.

Great Barrier Island is 90km from Auckland. You can hire a car at the airport and take the scenic four hour ferry ride from Auckland. There are cars and scooters available for hire at the Great Barrier Island wharf but, if you take this option, you need to book ahead as there is no public transport to fall back on. So check out our cheap flights to Auckland, book your Great Barrier Island hotel below, and get ready to escape from it all and enjoy your island holiday!
