With its glistening white cone visible from Reykjavík on a clear day, Snæfellsjökull is the most potent and enduring symbol of Snæfellsnes. If the glacier weren't there, however, the manifold wonders of Snæfellsnes would stand out just the same. Snæfellsjökull, (1,446 m) an ancient cone volcano, one of finest mountains in Iceland. An impressive sight from as far away as Reykjavík, from where it can be seen in clear weather, seeming to rise from the sea. Many prehistoric eruptions took place in the glacier-covered crater at its peak, and its slopes are covered with lava. The glacier is fairly easy to climb, about 4-6 hours to the highest peak, Þúfur. At the eastern base is a Tourist Association hut, now in ruins. The glacier dominates the area, the western part of which is covered with lava and known as “under the glacier”. In Jules Verne’s novel, A Journey to the Center of the Earth.

This place was beautiful!
The property is absolutely beautiful, could not ask for a better location. It was clean and had plenty of space. The restaurants near by were very good and the host was very quick to respond when I needed help with something. My only disappointment was there was not a bathtub like the pictures showed. host was very quick to respond

Nice place
All in all, a very nice place to stay. Comfortable and a wonderful location. Only improvements I’d suggest are to have paper towels on hand to aid in cleaning at checkout. Kitchen stove wasn’t very clean when we arrived and someone used the best pot under the kitchen sink drain which has a slow leak. Bathroom floor was not clean when we arrived either.

A charming cottage in a captivating countryside. The only disappointment was the stairs. They were too steep for my dad to climb, so he ended up on the couch for our stay.

Magical location
The Jules Verne cottage is perfectly located, as it offers panoramic ocean views and is near all the major sites that makes West Iceland so special. Highly recommend a stay here. Please be aware that the steps leading up to the two bedrooms are practically vertical and more akin to climbing a ladder. Younger children and older adults could very much struggle to ascend and descend. That being said, everything else about the cottage is perfect and I felt very fortunate to have stayed there.

Amazing!
This lovely place in Hellnar was a wonderful restful place to make our home base during a few days on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The cottage is lovely and clean and well-equipped. It was easy to explore the national park and there is a lovely hiking trail to the next town Arnarstappi. We cooked at home a few nights and had an amazing dinner at the local hotel (just a short walk down the road). Definitely would stay here again!

Disliked: Cleanliness, amenities, property conditions & facilities
This property is misleading the customers. A hot tub is listed as one of the amenities, in reality there's none. The house is not as private and peaceful as it is shown in the pictures, it is a part of cottage complex and neighboring houses are just a few meters away. The property was not clean upon arrival. There were safety and privacy issues. The guys who stayed in the next house were messing with my car and later same day a housekeeper from that house was circling the house I was staying in with a loud snowmobile. I need to also mention parking problems. No one bothered to clear the snow from the parking lot and the driveway, so people had park on the main road and carry the suitcases and groceries all the way from there in knee deep snow. Hot water is very limited in this house. If you do the laundry and wash the dishes using hot water, you might not have enough of it for a shower. I can understand that hot water in remote location might be limited, but the owners should have warned about it in advance.

Amazing Location Away from it ALL. Perfection.
This was a wonderful location and beautiful setting. We really enjoyed this spot as it was a great place to run around from as a base. There is not a lot around, but the next town over has some dining options. If you stay out here be sure to grab groceries before you head to the peninsula. Also make sure you are aware of the "self cleaning" house. We had an early departure and had to work that into our schedule. Overall amazing spot and truly unbelievable views. Would definitely stay here again.

Beautiful house in a beautiful spot
Very comfortable, warm and well decorated house in a very unique spot near mountains and the sea. Perfect location for exploring the peninsula. I'd stay here again. Worth noting that groceries are 30 minutes away and it is self-cleaning, meaning you must clean when you leave. It was ok for us as we wanted to be this remote and close to nature but if you were in a hurry on checkout day, it could be inconvenient.

We would stay again
Beautiful place and spot! The house had everything we needed and the location was fantastic change of scenery from where we had just traveled on the south coast. Even though the house is self-clean, there were no issues. As others have said, this wouldn't be appropriate for anyone who has trouble with stairs, since the stairs to the bedrooms are quite steep and tricky. But aside from that, we would definitely stay here again!

Cute and Cozy
It was rainy and overcast while we were there and the northern lights were not to be. But, my husband and I did enjoy the relaxing on the couch and curling up and watching a movie after spending the days driving around sight seeing. Everything we needed was there except paper towels. It is a drive to get to a store so make sure you have what you need when you arrive. There are several houses around this place, so not secluded. There was only one family there while we were there and we really did not hear them. Overall, the place is very cute, cozy and perfect for our adventure on the Sneafellness Peninsula .

Cozy cottage at a great location
This cottage is a great choice for two couples seeking comfortable lodging in this beautiful remote location. The bedrooms are small and up stairs but they are comfortable with separate wall heaters in each. The sitting area and dining area are comfortable and surprisingly spacious with incredible views. Ocean in front and mountain in back. The cooking facilities are complete, which is good because restaurant choices are very limited. Coastal hiking, National Park and waterfall sightseeing are all here. We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights during an evening walk. Host communication was prompt and cordial.

Nice option in snaefellsnes peninsula
Cute little house, fully self contained with a great kitchen. The TV room is so cozy. Comfy beds. It is in a group of similar houses, so there are other people around, but the area is very quiet. Had fish soup and coffee daily at the little cafe at the old "harbor". Beautiful hiking along the cliffs easy walk from the house.

A wonderful stay under the glacier
We had a great stay at Gestur’s cottage at Hellnar. The location is magnificent, with both the Snæfells glacier and Stapafell looming in the background. The beach at Hellnar was wonderful and walking to Arnarstapi was a light and charming hike along the coast. The cottage is also very well located to explore the whole of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The house itself was clean and well equipped with a well-functioning kitchen. The bed was very comfortable. The staircase to the upper floor was unusual but we got used to in no time. Checking in was very easy and flexible and all communications with Gestur were prompt and pleasant. We would love to come back and enjoy the magical Snæfellsnes peninsula some more.

Beautiful cabin by the ocean in Hellnar
The property is lovely and situated in the scenic town of Hellnar next to the ocean. The house was friendly and easy to use, minus the very steep staircase up to the bedrooms, which would not be friendly to elderly or differently-abled people. Otherwise, it was incredibly cute, spacious and well furnished.

Absolutely amazing cottage
My friends and I stayed at the cottage in July 2021. The location was perfect for exploring the peninsula. Can walk down to Hellnar beach and take the lovely trail along the coast to Arnaspti. Also a lovely little cafe at Hellnar beach. Location is really beautiful, with lovely view of the ocean on one side and the mountains on the other. Hosts were wonderful, great communication and super responsive. Cottage is very cute with good layout and furnishings, and a nice kitchen with all of the cookware and utensils you need. Overall loved it!
