About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire home to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Luxury holiday cottage set in idyllic unique location close to Hadrian's Wall.

Situated in a peaceful valley at the confluence of two streams, this site would have been sacred to the Romans and is still a very special place today. With the ramparts of the fort guarding the farm yard to the west and the only Roman milestone left standing intact in it’s original position just behind the cottage, few properties in Britain can have so many traces of Rome around them.

The cottage at Codley Gate Farm has recently been converted to provide superbly appointed 5 star holiday accommodation. There is a fabulous well-equipped spacious dining kitchen, a cosy sitting room with an inglenook style fireplace and three double bedrooms, each with their own luxury en-suite bathroom. Lovely country walks can be enjoyed directly from the cottage. There is a sheltered graveled yard to sit out in on your return and use of the meadow in front of the cottage.

Ideally situated to explore Hadrians Wall Country together with the breath-taking Northumberland countryside and coastline

Setting: Codley Gate Cottage was once the main dwelling house on the site but was converted to a milking parlour when our ‘modern’ farmhouse replaced it in the 1800’s.

In 2008 the barn was sympathetically restored using the best of modern building methods combined with traditional materials to provide a spacious and comfortable holiday home. The valley is rich in British natural wildlife with red squirrels, deer, badgers and bats regularly seen from the cottage. Swallows, owls and curlews are part of the abundant bird life that surrounds Codley Gate.

Area attractions: The list is endless but a few highlights are Vindolanda and the Chesterholme Museum, The Forts along The Wall including Housesteads & Chesters. Kielder Water and Forest park. Country Houses within a short distance include Wallington Hall and Cragside. Coastal Castles at Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Lindisfarne Holy Island. The Alnwick Water Gardens and Castle.

Whether you wish to visit Roman or other historical sights, enjoy the unspoilt countryside with moorland or woodland walks, visit the Northumbrian Coastline or the Lake District or simply curl up with one of our good books or magazines by the fire, there will always be plenty to do here.

The kitchen is well equipped for those who enjoy cooking that special meal, (there are good farm shops, Waitrose and other quality supermarkets to choose from). Alternatively there is a wide choice of places to dine locally.

We will do everything we can to make your holiday relaxing and enjoyable. Please let us know if there is anything further you need.

Beautiful Cottage
We’ve stayed at Codley Gate many times and it never disappoints. A lovely comfortable cottage equipped with everything we need. It’s a fantastic area with great historical sites (especially Vindalanda) and wonderful scenery.

Great location and stay
Wonderful week here. The only thing that let it down was the smell of the drains in the downstairs toilet. Also, the tiles leading into the toilet from the living room was a bit of trip hazard as they are uneven which my 84year old dad tripped on. Otherwise, the property was great, with free entrance to Vindolanda, as was the location generally.

Great property in Northumberland
This cottage was in a beautiful, quiet location, close to the Vindolanda Museum. It has a well-appointed kitchen, three bedrooms, each with ensuite bathroom (one down, two upstairs), and plenty of parking space. The welcome amenities were over the top! We had everything we needed for our first breakfast, and then some. Our host was very responsive to questions. A couple of suggestions, though. The VRBO listing showed a dryer, but there was only a washer in the cottage. Since we were on an extended trip, we chose locations partly on whether they had washer and dryer available, so had to make adjustments. Also the directions to the cottage were confusing. Since we knew it was close to Vindolanda, we did better when we started from the Sill to find it. Perhaps it would be better to drop a pin that the SATNAV could use? We would definitely visit this property again.

Perfect spot for history fans
We stayed here as part of birthday celebrations for a big Roman history fan. It felt so special to stay right next to Vindolanda and to know that the Trust benefitted from our stay. The cottage is gorgeous, well stocked with some very kind welcome snacks and plenty of useful amenities. All the rooms are comfortable and the nearby pub is excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would absolutely recommend to anyone thinking about booking.

Fantastic stay
We had a brilliant stay at Codley Farm Cottage. The house was really comfortable and very well equipped. The welcome pack was amazing and very much appreciated after the long drive. We made good use of the free entry into the Vindolanda site (which is simply mind blowing) and the Roman Army Museum. The house is perfectly situated for lots of lovely walks all from the front door and we had a brilliant evening at the nearby Kielder Observatory. A wonderful week that we hope to repeat one day - thank you.

Very well-furnished - everything provided - lovely quiet spot with three en-suite bedrooms 2double, 1twin. Very peaceful and quiet with lots of birds and wildlife and access to amazing Roman site of Vindolanda, which you are right next to & Roman Army Museum about 8 miles away. Would recommend.

A Cozy Gem
We loved our stay at Codley Gate Cottage. It is well equipped as a home away from home. We especially love the big kitchen for home cooked meals and the wood burning stove that helps to take the chill off, at the end of a day well spent in the beautiful Northumberland countryside!

Grubby
Very grubby and smelly. Not recently refurbished as stated! Arrived midnight Friday and access was fine. However, no Wifi and no hot water. A little disheartening after a whole day travelling (3 flights). Our families were worried too as they couldn’t make contact. This was sorted the next day however. Went to put a bin bag in the green bin on the Sunday morning but it was full to the top. So contacted the property manager, who said that some one would be over to us soon to take the bins to the end of the road to be emptied. This didn’t happen till 9am on the day we left. So we had no choice but to double bag our rubbish and place on top of the bins out of the way of animals. The downstairs bathroom smells awful. Blocked drain? Put a kettle of boiling water down the plug hole and the toilet to see if it would help but it didn’t. Resorted to hanging a car freshener in there to try and mask it. Tv didn’t work. Mould in showers. Dirty carpets. Dusty! Cobwebs all over. Could be such a pretty cottage. Handy for Vindolanda and sycamore gap but a good 45 minutes from town. £54 for a taxi. A lady was at the cottage opposite on the morning we left (waiting for a plumber) and was chatting to a man but was pointing over to the cottage grimacing and shaking her head. But, unbeknownst to her, myself and my daughter were at the upstairs open window watching a deer in the field and we caught her scowling and saying about the rubbish. So I swiftly went down to inform her that we had reported full bins at the start of our trip and had been waiting all week for something to be done. Clearly embarrassed, lied about the pointing at us but apologised once I set the record straight. We left the cottage cleaner than when we found it. Vacuumed, beds made, used towels folded and placed in shower tray, sinks and toilets wiped, kitchen wiped, dishwasher loaded, some towels in wash and bin emptied! Very disappointing and not a five star experience at all.

Lovely cosy house, fabulous location
This is our second visit to this property so we knew what to expect and were not disappointed. Being able to stay in the shadow of the Vindolanda fort is magical - very peaceful and atmospheric when everyone else has left in the evenings! An early problem with the broadband was quickly sorted by the host - this was useful as there is no mobile signal in the valley although there is a landline phone. It's advisable to bring a car as it's a long walk to the bus stop!

Most relaxing location
We loved how pretty and private this property is. Lovely to sit at the picnic table on the lawn and gaze up at the remains of the Roman fort of Vindolanda. Having a free pass to Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum was a huge bonus; we went several times! I didn't think our 6-year-olds would enjoy looking at army barracks ruins, but they had a ball! Special thanks to whoever cleaned the house, it was absolutely pristine on our arrival; not a speck of dust anywhere. Impressive.

Great cottage, beautiful location
Great place to stay while half the party spent 2 weeks volunteering at Vindolanda. The other half enjoyed walks and bike rides straight from the door. Having an en suite for each bedroom made it easy for 2 generations to easily share the property. Everyone had a lovely holiday, memorable for all the right reasons.

Lovely, cosy cottage in wonderful location
This was our second stay at Vindolanda (with 6 or so years in between) and we were so pleased to see that the standard of the cottage had been so well maintained. Such a warm, comfortable cottage to see out winter storms. The only improvement - and it is minor - would be to have better TV internet access. We would have liked to be able to access our own Netflix/BBC accounts rather than be limited to the DVDs available. However this did not impact on our enjoyment. We loved having such easy access to Vindolanda and the Roman Army Museum. We will definitely be back and hopefully sooner than last time!

Lovely rural retreat
We had a fantastic week staying here. The cottage was just what we needed. Perfect to use as a base during the day to go off and explore the stunning Northumberland countryside and visit parts of Hadrian’s Wall and then very comfortable for 4 adults to spend the evenings cooking meals, watching films and playing games in front of the log burner. The contactless check-in process was seamless and we enjoyed being left to our own devices. The welcome hamper of prosecco, biscuits, milk, bread and eggs was very much appreciated and the surrounding area was wonderfully quiet with very friendly locals. Would absolutely recommend the cottage as a place to stay.
