About this property

Entire place

You'll have the entire cabin to yourself and will only share it with other guests in your party.

Mökki: Hovland Hut

This cozy cabin provides a perfect getaway and is a gem in all seasons, especially during the fall colors or a blowing winter storm.

Timber frame cabin built on a hilltop, on 20 acres of old-growth maples. Walls of glass, a screened-in porch, and a wrap-around deck bring the outdoors inside. You can even stargaze from the comfort of the bed!

The ridge-top location has spectacular views through the trees - with lake views after the leaves drop.

The property also boasts a fantastic wood-fired cedar sauna - perfect for rejuvenating.

The timber frame cabin is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and Lake Superior.

The cabin sleeps up to 3 (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot).

Folks will need to bring:
- Sleeping bags/blankets/pillows for beds
- Drinking water. There is rain barrel water for washing, but not for drinking. In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing.
- Headlamps/flashlight to get to the outhouse and sauna

The cabin is equipped with:
- wood sauna - 100 yards from the cabin
- outhouse
- wood stove for heating
- woodshed with ax, hatchet & buck saw (be prepared to split your kindling)
- gas & solar lighting
- 2-burner gas cooktop
- outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal & watch for fire bans)
- dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, cutting board, kettle, dishwashing basin

Cleaning Fee:
We do not charge a cleaning fee, so long as the cabin is left in the same condition (cleaned) as it was upon arrival. If the cabin is left uncleaned, a $50 penalty will be charged from the damage deposit. Remember to pack out your garbage.
Please be kind and leave some dry kindling inside for the next guests.

Summer access:
The road to the cabin is a paved road with the last mile as gravel. There is an unmaintained gravel hill just before the cabin which is rough and can be particularly tricky after heavy rainfall.

WARNING - Rough Road Conditions: This spring the North Shore experienced unprecedented snow melt and rainfall. As such Tower road has significantly degraded and is in a long queue for repairs. Until improved, a high clearance vehicle is required to drive up. Access to the cabin in this case is walk-up. Consider the use of a kids/garden wagon for your supplies. There are two designated parking areas located approx. 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. There is an open area, on the right-hand side (north side) of the maintained road, and there is a second parking area on the left-hand side just a few yards up. From here, the walk-up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. You will get hot!

Winter access:
Access to the cabin once there is snow on the ground is via snowshoeing or walking. Consider the use of a plastic kids sled to help carry in your supplies.

When there is snow, the road stops being plowed part way up. When this is the case, there is a plowed parking area approx 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. It is an open area, on the right-hand side (north side) of the maintained road. From here, the walk up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. The road is plowed for a bit longer past the parking, but parking should be in this open area.

In cold winter temperatures, the walk up when required can be quite a challenge. Dress accordingly, come prepared, and recognize that the woodfired heat can take a few hours for the cabin to warm up upon your arrival. It's all worth it though!

We highly recommend you arrive in the daylight - it will make your way up to the cabin much nicer, it is a beautiful walk up.

Network Service: There is no wifi. T-mobile and Verizon receive limited cell reception at the cabin.

Sauna Liability: Please note that guests use the sauna at their own risk.

Perfect for solo adventurers and couples willing to pack-in/pack-out. There isn't running water or a cleaner. Your ability to ‘Pay it Forward’ and leave the place as you found it is fundamental to maintaining an affordable experience in a healthy space for the next folks who are seeking a peaceful place to rest, create and rejuvenate.

*Kids stay free (12 years & under) - please notify us.

We know how important it is to have your canine companion with you when traveling. Our pet fee is $30 (dogs only) with a limit of one dog per stay.

Getaway from it all
Beautiful 20-acre Maple Forest. One of the best rustic cabins I have ever stayed in and I have traveled this area for 35+ years. Location unbelievable, good directions and description, enjoyed the sauna, view through large windows in cabin breathtaking. Only change I would make to listing: bring ice or other means to refrigerate food. listing didn't indicate this. No bathroom, outhouse only. I think listing said there is half bath.

Wonderful place
My husband and I spent the long weekend at Mokki. This place is wonderful and we are already planning our next trip when we can return. The property is beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The place was tidy and had everything we needed. The instructions left behind for the sink, fireplace, sauna, etc. were all very clear. The communication with the manager was great. Highly recommend a stay at Mokki Hovland Hut for a place to unwind and restore.

Relaxing Oasis in the Woods
The property and cabin were amazing and just what we needed for a relaxing fall anniversary celebration. I would not recommend visiting without an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicle. The windows in the cabin were mesmerizing as was the screened in porch where we were able to sit and listen to the rain! Thanks for sharing this slice of heaven in the woods!

A cozy retreat ... if you're willing to put in a little effort
Perfect for an off-the-grid weekend getaway up north, as long as you're prepared for a slightly different experience. For us and our dog, it was really enjoyable when we finally arrived. As the listing mentions, the last mile of uphill unmaintained gravel/rocky road is pretty rough and tricky, but I'd imagine it much more doable in an SUV. The outhouse was close to the cabin, the solar-powered lights in the cabin made no electricity no problem, and the sauna was cute and relaxing (we used it three times in one weekend). The bucket sink system made sense and was a little tedious, but just reminded me how grateful I am to have running water at home. The gas stove was handy, though we had trouble with the wood stove smoking up the cabin a bit. Thanks to the owner for keeping so much chopped wood available and lots of detailed instructions for everything. I wouldn't recommend this cabin for friends who aren't comfortable with wall-size windows on two sides of the structure, or those who are concerned about wild animals, but it was just fine for our experience. The sun through the trees is a much nicer wake-up routine than an alarm clock. The door lock didn't work, but the owner messaged about replacing it soon. I imagine the mosquitoes would be terrible in summer, but our fall weather of 40s–60s felt just right for this place.

Came back engaged!
My partner and I love it up north, and I wanted somewhere quiet and remote to unwind after the year we've been having. Since there was no rain, our little car (Chevy Aveo) made it up the big hill just fine. We spent our weekend there splitting time between hiking and just relaxing in the cozy warmth provided by the woodstove. If you used to read all the time and now seem unable to find the time or focus, I would encourage you to bring a book up, both of us finished around 400 pages while we were there. Our first hike was to the high falls on Pigeon River, and when we found a nice secluded spot off the paved trail, I asked Aj to marry me. We finished the hike with rings on our fingers and then went to Mt. Josephine, where we struggled our way to an extraordinary view. The rest of the vacation passed too quickly, i'd have stayed another week if I could, but this place will always occupy a fond corner of my memory. Hope to be back, or check out another Mokki some time soon!

Charming Cabin
We loved staying at this cabin. For no running water and no electricity, it was so comfortable! Everything down to the last detail was thought of. I would definitely recommend staying here. The one small downfall is the road to the cabin is quite diffyto drive on. We had an SUV, but even still it was challenging. If you don’t mind that, you will love it

Beautiful and quiet
If you're looking for a lovely, well-equipped place for a retreat in the woods, this is it. The road up is not ideal for compact cars, but otherwise, it's easy to get to Lake Superior, Grand Marais, and to one of the best pies on the North Shore (at the Chicago Bay Market). We love this place and have returned year after year.

Just perfect!
The little cabin was exactly the place we needed to be. Set way back in the woods and really peaceful. Away for all the noise & lights. Cell service was sporadic so that was a nice change of pace to not have our jobs weighing on us for a little while. We did a lot of hiking. High Falls and Devils Kettle/Superior trail were just beautiful to hike to. We also hiked Mt Josephine Trail - difficult but worth the view at the top of Canada and Isle Royal. My husband read some of Lonnie's book that he had written (not enough time to finish) and just enjoyed relaxing. Mornings were slow with coffee and breakfast. Nights were relaxing with the sauna and bonfire and lots of much needed sleep. Naniboujou Lodge (about 8 min away) was a nice gem to find for breakfast and dinner spot.. We would definitely be back to this area and stay here again.

An off-grid dream cabin!
The Mokki cabin was the perfect little off-grid cabin we were seeking. I had a similar cabin (treehouse) in upstate NY so coming to Mokki was like coming home. Relatively remote but still close to lots of great hikes and amenities...and waking up surrounded by trees was just plain perfect. Highly recommended!

Great secluded cabin filled with rustic charm!
We enjoyed three nights at the mökki! Perfect get away and close to trails and all that Grand Marais offers while being totally secluded in the woods. Our almost 2 year old was especially enthralled with the indoor swing chair! We may need to look into a adding one to our home now. Made several trips to the nearby Paradise Beach for long walks and agate hunting. We also enjoyed learning more about the owners exciting adventures through the books available on site. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for remote rustic charm. The outhouse was a tad claustrophobic and a little unnerving with the exposed nails - just make sure to check your surroundings on the way in and out. Thanks for the great memories. We were sad to leave and are already thinking about our return trip next summer.

Great cabin
Me my wife and two kiddos had a great time here at the Mokki. I think two adults and two young children is about the maximum the Mokki is set up to accommodate; the space is clean, cozy, and comfortable with large windows providing great views of the woods. Basic cookware and some other thoughtful amenities are provided. There is a hammock chair mounted to the ceiling/framing, which our 7 year old wasted no time discovering. The interior space is maybe around 400 square feet (my guestimate); in other words, cabin size. There is a wraparound porch, one side of which is fully screened. There was more than enough firewood provided for cooking and sauna use, as well a a basic splitting ax, hatchet and grill. The room has a basic, comfortable queen size bed with a single mattress covered with vinyl. Be prepared to bring your own sheets, comforters, pillows, etc. The road to the Mokki was a tad gnarly. We made it up in our rental vehicle, a small 2 wheel drive SUV, but it took some technique and care (as well as a few prayers and also a few muttered curses) to actually reach the Mokki. Be aware that accessibility by car may be an issue for some. The road is a bit washed out. If we had to lug all our our bedding/gear/water/food/beer uphill to the the cabin with our kids in tow, it probably would have been a slight drag. I realize I'm being a grade-A wussie here, but that's just who I am. As it is, a Nissan pathfinder (or the like) will do the trick nicely. The sauna is great. If you are familiar with traditional wood-burning saunas, you will feel right at home here. The stove heats up the place quickly, and there is plenty of wood on site. It is a short walk from the cabin to the sauna, so bring mosquito spray if you are staying here in the summer months. I say this for the benefit of my fellow non-minnesotans; the state bird is no joke. Very close to the cabin is a small convenience store/bakery/liquor store. It's right in Hovland, you'll have no trouble finding it. I strongly recommend the blueberry pie. The beer selection is perfectly solid and priced to sell. Bottom line; if you love nature, peace and quiet and can split soft pine, if you enjoy cooking over a fire and can safely operate a simple wood-burning stove, you will enjoy this place. Would strongly consider staying here again.

Peaceful and beautiful
We had a great time during our stay. The property came exactly as advertised. The road was too gnarly for my Hyundai Elantra, but we expected as such coming in. We loved the hiking and the fire tower. The stove ruled too! We would love to come back again during the fall and check out the forest/fire tower at that time. It was buggy but it rained a bunch and got a bit chilly so that wasn't as bad as we expected. The sauna was the perfect answer to some of those wet and chilly days. We didn't have a non-phone compass so we were curious about Tom Lake Rd and if it connects to the SHT. We took it down a ways to where it forks off into a private road on the left and washed out/minimum maintained road on the right. Due to all of the rain the trail to the right became a bit of a low-water rapid and we had to turn around at about the 20-25 minute mark of our hike...but my feeling was we were quite close to the SHT from that angle. Thanks again Lonnie!

Amazing retreat!!
My husband and 2 daughters stayed for two nights and loved it! The cabin was so nicely done and had everything we needed. It was so nice getting away from cellphones and technology and enjoy the tranquility of the forest. It was very remote. We hiked up the hill and it is very steep and rockey. Mosquito spray is recommended from the second you get out of the car. The initial hike to the cabin seemed long since we didn't know where we were going but the signs pointed to the hut. I felt like the hike from the car was beautiful and part of the experience. We also loved the Sauna and fire pit. The propane lights and stove were fab. We heard wolves and owls in the evening and enjoyed sitting on the screened in porch. We really hope to go back. Especially my 10 year old daughter.
