The Love River doesn’t just have an awesome name - it is also an artery bringing life to Kaohsiung’s new attractions, twisting through the city centre before flowing into the harbour on Taiwan’s southwest coast. The long paths that run along both banks deep into the city are perfect for walking or cycling while you take in sailboats on the water by day and the beautiful riverside lighting by night.

Highlights along the river include a short detour east to enjoy the calm fish ponds, small hedge maze and café with live music in Central Park. In fact, even the Central Park Station is a sight to see, with flower beds planted on the slopes surrounding by escalators as you descend underground. Further down the eastern promenade you will eventually reach the Heart of the Love River, a beautifully-landscaped part of the waterfront that mixes curved bridges and pathways with green grass, trees and beautiful lighting. Needless to say, it’s best to bring your loved one here at night to really turn up the romance.

Another good place to get on a bicycle is Qijin District, which is a thin island separating the harbour from the sea. Catch the ferry across and you can pick your seafood straight from the tanks in the area’s many restaurants, followed up with a visit to Chihou Fort, a site with concrete pits and bunkers that will remind you of historic war films. Even if you aren’t a history buff, the hill that the bunker sits on offers spectacular panoramic views of the sea and cityscape.

The enthusiastic shoppers among you will delight to know that Kaohsiung has the biggest mall in Taiwan. Once you’re done with the shops here make sure you check out the amusement park on the roof to take a ride on the Kaohsiung Eye Ferris Wheel or let the kids have a go in the inflatable floating balls.

Kaohsiung adds a little personal twist to the end of its Chinese New Year celebrations (January-February) with the Kaohsiung Lantern Festival. Traditional and modern lantern displays line areas of the harbour and Love riverfront, and you’ll be able to feast at the many food stands between enjoying a live concert or two.
