Holidays To Kirkland
Located on the east bank of Lake Washington, the city of Kirkland is both outdoorsy and geek-chic.
Sure, an internationally loved technology is developed there, but surfing the Internet at home isn’t as exciting as kayaking while you’re on holiday in Kirkland!
Forget what you’ve heard about the weather in the “Evergreen State”. Seattle’s neighbour to the east gets its fair share of sunny beach days. And, hey, April showers bring May flowers…and gorgeous views of nearby national forests. So scoop up some package deals to Kirkland float on over! But really, you should probably take a plane.
Things to Do in Kirkland
For a big city, Kirkland is very low-key, so expect Kirkland holidays to follow suit—by which we mean wetsuits in the bay. Chill out in your pick of waterfront parks from Houghton Beach Park toward the south end of town to Marina Park near the city docks and Juanita Bay and Beach Parks further north. In the summertime you’ll see locals don their bathers and splash around, but the water is usually on the cooler side and boating, kayaking and jet skiing is best with a layer of high-tech sportswear (it’s a good thing Kirkland is so tech-savvy).
Now, you could spend days on the water, but if you’re more of a landlubber, take one of Wotif’s Kirkland Car rental deals and head out for a day trip or two into the mountains. The famous Mount Rainier National Park is just a two-hour drive to the south and Mount Baker is a three-hour drive to the northeast, so don’t forget to pack your hiking boots.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Kirkland may be the hometown of the American wholesale giant Costco, but you don’t have to buy everything in bulk around here. In fact, Kirkland is a great destination for vintage and boutique shoppers. Check out the downtown area for local retail and high-end consignment stores, or wander uptown to the Totem Lake neighbourhood for vintage shops as well as bridal boutiques—in case you’re in the market.
With plenty of international cuisines to choose from and waterfront restaurants near downtown and Juanita Bay, you’ll spend your Kirkland holiday sampling some of the best of the Pacific Northwest. And what is Washingtonian cuisine? Well, devour some seaside comfort food with fresh fish and sip a glass of the local chardonnay and you’ve got it.
The nightlife in Kirkland is a mix of laid-back brew pubs and cocktail bars and dance clubs just waiting for shenanigans. Whichever you’re looking for, downtown is the place to be. Totem Lake’s nightlife, like its shopping scene, is a little tamer with fewer bars and the addition of comedy clubs in a more removed location. Sip and snicker!
