Quiet & Well Equipped Cabin on 50 private acres

This retreat was built to view the sun, the moon and the trees. Part of a 50 acre family compound, this property has abundant wildlife and a network of walking and skiing trails which take you past wetlands, cliffs and through the forest.

Camp Hatteras has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 8 people. Two of the bedrooms have two twin beds each and a third bedroom has a queen bed. An open loft has a futon, which can be folded open to sleep another two people. There are two bathrooms with showers and a complete laundry room with a washer and dryer. There are toys for younger children and a high chair and "potty" for toddlers.

A wrap-around deck has a propane grill and picnic table in a screened porch. The home has fresh, clean well water. There is a nice campfire spot for summertime marshmallow roasts or quiet fire gazing. We supply a complimentary bundle of campfire wood that you can use during your stay.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, electric oven and range, a dishwasher, and all of the things needed for cooking.

In the winter, the home can be heated with a glass-front wood stove. Firewood is supplied for our winter guest's heating comfort. The driveway travels about 200 yards in from the main road and is well plowed with plenty of parking. If you'd rather not heat with a wood stove, the electric baseboard heat is always available.

35 minute drive from Lake Placid
Private and secluded, yet centrally located, Camp Hatteras is located seven miles north of Paul Smiths College on Rt. 30. You will be in one of the most varied wilderness areas of the park. We are located in the middle of some of the Adirondack's most dependable snow for cross-country skiing, with abundant groomed and back country trails nearby.

The Paul Smith’s Visitors Interpretive Center is five miles away and is open year round with wonderful hiking, XC skiing, snowshoe trails and educational programs for the whole family.

You will be 25 minutes to Titus Mountain Ski Center, Saranac Lake or Malone; 35 minutes to Lake Placid and its Olympic venues; 50 minutes to Whiteface Mountain. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (the Wild Center) is 40 minutes away in Tupper Lake.

In the warmer months, there are nearby trails which are excellent for mountain biking with both back country roads and single-track. Designated horseback riding trail heads are less than a mile away. A Wild and Scenic Study River, the Osgood, flows nearby with put-in and take-outs within a couple of miles of your driveway. Drop-off and pick-up arrangements can be made. This is a must paddle for those interested in wildlife and scenery. Many have spotted the Bald Eagle who has a nest at the rivers edge. We are surrounded by many great fishing spots.

Your hosts, Bob and Sheila, are NYS licensed guides, Bob a former professional wilderness guide, and Sheila a life-long resident of the Paul Smiths area. Between the two of them, good advice connecting you to great experiences and unique destinations is as close to a sure thing as you can get. The temporary use of their brains is complimentary!
Camp Hatteras features 33 private acres of woodland. We have miles of x-c skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and mountain biking trails on our property. Join us during maple sugaring season in the spring to learn how we make maple syrup and try collecting sap!

A week in a snow globe
We spent a February week in this perfectly situated and well-kept cottage in the piney Adirondack woods. All sight lines are trees. The snow fell nearly every day, or night. We rented snowshoes from the owners (who are great hosts) and used them every day but one - a day we rested and read by the wood stove. Our treks were mostly on the property, which offers variety and views. One day we snowshoed at the VIC around Black Pond - woodsy and quiet. We also made several runs down the sledding hill - don’t let your inner 10 year old miss out on that fun! I’m sure this is a great place to stay in any season but we’ll have fond memories of our week in a snow globe at Camp Hatteras.

Great house and surroundings
My family had a great stay at Camp Hatteras. The house was clean and well stocked. Sheila was a great host, and knows everything about the area. We loved the trails on the grounds, which were well marked. It was nice to be close to Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, where we were able to get takeout. We would love to return in the spring/summer, post-Covid to explore the hiking and restaurants in the area.
