Lovely C.1890 Flat with Garden in Historic Downtown

Like the owners' other property, Middleton House, McDowell Studio combines 19th-century charm with pure comfort. The Studio, which has lofty ceilings and a generous sitting room, sleeps 4. It occupies the 3rd floor of a handsome historic house, just blocks from downtown, Washington & Lee, and VMI. A charming stone walk winds through the Studio's private garden to its private stairs and entrance. (Since there are two flights of stairs, McDowell Studio is definitely NOT HANDICAPPED-ACCESSIBLE.)

Formerly an artist's studio, the secluded apartment floods with light during the day, thanks to large windows with views and skylights. (Skylights operate electronically and open to catch the breeze.) Hand-printed wallpapers, c. 1880-1890 antiques, sea grass matting, comfortable seating, and a collection of paintings and prints contribute to the flat's atmosphere and charm. A carefully equipped custom kitchen with soapstone counters and a spacious tiled bathroom with shower offer thoroughly modern convenience.

The bedroom features a queen-sized iron and brass bed, while a top-quality sleeper sofa in the living room accommodates two additional guests. Meals can be taken at a small table in the kitchen or a large one in one corner of the airy sitting room.

Visitors can lounge on the sitting room's sofas or on the flat's small porch--or in the Studio's garden, which has a grill and Adirondack chairs. Thanks to the gardens surrounding the house, birdsong fills the air. (Bird-glasses are provided for those who want a closer look.) Guests also enjoy strolling or cycling nearby Wood's Creek Trail, which follows the creek to the Maury River and Jordan's Point Park.

McDowell Studio is perfectly positioned for shopping and dining in historic downtown Lexington. W & L's Lenfest Center, just 3 blocks away, presents concerts, plays, ballets, and even opera. And this luxurious apartment provides a convenient base for visiting Washington & Lee or VMI, with their elegant architecture and abiding sense of Southern tradition. McDowell Studio offers guests a rare opportunity to live graciously in the very heart of historic Lexington.

Great, Unique Experience
The apartment was larger than we had thought, and was in a great location to be able to walk to and from the university and downtown Lexington. Would highly recommend!

The perfect distance from the Horse Center
This is my third stay at this delightful property. Charming, comfortable, well-equipped kitchen, walking distance to Lexington restaurants and an easy drive to the Virginia Horse Center. Can't wait for my next visit! The hosts are responsive, the apartment is filled with character, and the views over the treetops are peaceful and private.

W &L retreat
This cozy apartment is tucked at the back of a house through a secret garden. It is lovely to walk around the neighborhood, And a 5 minute walk to W&L campus. It was a perfect location for us as we were heading back and forth to campus for an athletic camp. If we come back to Lexington, will definitely check this location first.

What was not clear in the initial description was that the unit was accessed by two flights of outdoor stairs. The first flight of stairs was uncovered which made me a bit anxious as to lugging my stuff up an uncovered stair in the rain.

Wish I could have stayed longer!
This top-floor apartment (not good if you have mobility issues, but wonderful if you enjoy looking out from a high place, which I do!) is comfortable, well-equipped (kitchen dishes were much appreciated), beautifully furnished, and very secure/safe. The owners were immediately responsive to questions, and the flat itself has so much character. Can't wait to stay again.

Anniversary in Lexington
We had never spent much time in Lexington but it was a great small town. This loft is very close to down town and Washington and Lee. We arrived at night and it was very dark trying to find our way behind the house and up the stairs. We figured out the lights later on. Accommodations were clean but could use a little updating as the couches have no cushion left. Extra pillows for the bed would also be appreciated. The house, neighborhood and location make up for the not picky stuff.

A perfect experience in a cute town
This property is located in a quaint little college town. The apartment is close to Washington and Lee University and all you need is within walking distance. The apartment is spacious, comfortable, and clean. There are three flights of stairs to walk up in order to get to door, but it was good exercise!

Quick Get away
We enjoyed our time staying here in downtown Lexington. The house was very clean & the skylights were amazing! Everything was comfortable & quaint. Only suggestion would be to bring your own coffee because kitchen was not stocked & be ready for 3 steep flights of stairs as it’s not ideal for anyone who has bad knees. Would have enjoyed more communication with the owners but overall it was a nice trip & we would go back!

Perfect Lexington Spot for Two
The location of this property could not be better. Everything in downtown Lexington and on the W&L campus is literally within walking distance, our car was parked out front for 90% of the four days that we were there for my son's graduation. The accommodations are lovely with abundant artwork to inspire and wonderfully comfortable furnishings. Spot-on clean. Very unique in a boutique style, quiet and restful. Description and pictures are accurate if maybe a bit modest. The only drawback was the walk through the garden to the private entrance on a rainy night, somewhat muddy as the garden is a bit overgrown (some might say natural). Perfect for two persons looking to "live" the Lexington experience.

We were in town helping our Cadet pack to come home for the summer. What a perfect place to come back to relax! Great location, short walk to restaurants and shopping. Kitchen is very well equipped. Made breakfast both mornings. Air conditioning works great. Overall we felt like we were back in time with the old world charm but still had all the modern conveniences.

Excellent Location for W&L events
This was the perfect place for us to stay during our son's recent graduation ceremony from Washington and Lee. Parking is always a challenge on campus and the location of this house is perfect to walk to just about anywhere in town. I will also say this studio is much more spacious than the photos reflect. It has a lot of room! As the description says, it is on the third floor and there are a lot of steps but it is well worth the hike! One suggestion I would make is that the staircase was lit. We did have to use our phone's flashlight coming up and down after dark. Overall I couldn't have been more pleased with our stay! It definitely beats staying at one of the hotels out by the highway - I wish we had found this rental earlier in our son's time at W&L!
