Lopez Island, Cottage at Shark Reef #222

*** This home is people friendly, and not pet friendly. This home is not suitable for children under 12 years old.***

Welcome to the Cottage at Shark Reef, a beautiful 5 acre waterfront home with expansive water views. Once you step in the front door your eyes go directly to the large windows framing the gorgeous water view and what a site it is! Inside you will find warm toned wood walls and floors along with log poles in the corners of the open floor plan in the living room and kitchen. The house uses a wood burning stove for heat and includes firewood for your stay to keep things warm and cozy. A window seat off the living room beckons you to sit a while, perhaps read a good book or have your morning coffee while taking in the view. Doors lead out onto the deck patio with a table and chairs so you can relax and watch boats go by and gaze upon the south end of San Juan Island.

Off the entryway is the bathroom with a shower/tub combo and across the entryway is the first bedroom with a queen size bed and TV. Along the edge of the kitchen is a spiral staircase leading to the second bedroom with a queen size bed with a TV and DVD player, with windows looking out towards the water.

Picnic anyone? Come take a seat at the water’s edge. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner or how about all three! and view one of the many beautiful sunsets we have in the San Juan Islands. The stairs lead down to the beach.

The home is situated on the southern area of the island where Shark Reef Sanctuary is located. A variety of birds and marine life can be seen here and is a short walk through the woods to a small pebble beach. But, the beach is not the highlight of the Sanctuary. The seals are known to sun themselves on the rocks here so you may see one on your visit. Wonderful beaches are to be explored at Odlin State Park and Spencer Spit State Park where one can launch kayaks. Lopez Village has a charming small town feel with cute shops and restaurants to explore. Don’t forget to bring your bike as the island is the perfect spot for bike riding.

Come and experience all that the Cottage at Shark Reef has to offer; we welcome you to Lopez Island.

Please note: this home's washer and dryer are located in an outbuilding, not in the main house. Also, as you'll note in the pictures, the open floor plan and high vaulted ceilings allow for some sound transmission between the living room and bedrooms. Portable heaters are available in the bedrooms to supplement heat.

SPECIAL NOTES:
-No steps to the entrance of the home.
-No outdoor fires are allowed anywhere on the property due to fire danger and prohibition by County regulation.
-Beach access from the property is shared with other homes in the neighborhood; you may encounter neighbors on the stairs to the beach.

Please note: residential internet speeds, bandwidth and reliability in the San Juan Islands currently lag behind the mainland. Guests who wish to use videoconferencing, streaming services, or multiple simultaneous internet connections should be aware that performance may not meet the levels they are accustomed to. Guests may need to alter their online work and entertainment plans due to service fluctuations or outages.

Spectacular!
We loved our stay! The views from inside and out are amazing. We were treated to one spectacular sunset and lots of wildlife sightings. We loved the privacy and solitude and would happily return for another visit

Cottage stay
The location is awesome. However, the bathroom is rather inconvenient and small, the lighting system confusing.

San Juan Islands at their finest.
I don’t know what the previous complaints in the reviews are talking about. The house is amazing. The views are amazing. Well appointed, well-stocked kitchen. The refrigerator is small, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to hole up for a weekend. We brought a cooler and kept on the deck.

Great we can get away!
We absolutely loved our stay. We visit Lopez Island at least once a year, and have stayed in many rentals. This place was cozy, inviting, and comfortable for our family of three. The view is amazing, the kitchen decently stocked, beds are comfortable, and the wood stove warmed our late October weekend perfectly (even in the windstorm!). Oh, and the bathtub is glorious. I would return here without hesitation.

Perched at the water’s edge
This stay provided a great view, perched on the rocks above the Sea with steps down to a lovely cove. The cabin was comfortable and stylish. We cooked some good meals there. It was warm enough that we didn’t need to start a fire, and just ran the small electric heater to cut the morning chill before heading out on our bicycles or to beachcomb and hike. Spotted eagles, seals and even a passing whale.

Amazing
We saw Orcas, seals, and Eagles right from the back deck. Our kids didn’t want to do anything but play in the yard.

Mixed Thoughts
This is a lovely home and the view and privacy are unmatched. However, here were the downsides: We were greeted by an unswept/messy porch covered with pine needles. We visited in January and the heating is wood fireplace (and a few space heaters). When we arrived there were only 7 pieces of unseasoned/wet wood. There was no kindling and no paper to help start a fire. We called the property mgr and she was quite nice but it wasn't until the next day in the early afternoon that the situation got resolved, so we had to go buy our own firewood just to keep warm (reimbursement is forthcoming). The flashlights that were there for our using all had dead batteries. The bathroom sink leaked water all over the counter when it was turned on. The windows had not been cleaned and the large pane window in front of the kitchen sink had a broken seal which obstructed the gorgeous view. The view from the yard under the house is cluttered with tools and debris.

Sunsets, seals and the sea
Views. Comfort. Privacy. Otters. Seals. Eagles. Sunsets. Perfect spot for a quiet getaway. Lots of comfortable spots for reading, napping and enjoying the views, indoors and out. Lovely county park within walking distance. Strong WiFi signal. Obey when the owner asks that you download entry instructions. Cellular service on the ferry and island is limited or non-existent.

HEAVEN ON EARTH
My three daughters and my mother and I stayed here for an entire week in September. This house and moreover the location was more than we could have ever expected.. The Views - AMAZING. The House was everything detailed in pictures provided. No surprises there. The fairy-tale driveway which seemed like half a mile long through dense green lush forest was something you see in movies.. Otters (we were told by the one and only gentleman we ever saw there (a neighbor) playing in the water most days. The Eagle who obviously resides right around the house.. the dolphins playing in the water... Everything was AMAZING.. The refrigerator BTW was entirely big enough for a family of 5. The grill - we never could get the valve on to the tank to barbecue - laundry facilities up the driveway - were completely and totally adequate. WE DIDN'T STAY AT THIS HOUSE - WE LIVED!! Can't wait to go back!!!

Absolutely beautiful
This is a perfect rental for any adventure loving family or persons. It does require some effort to access the laundry facilities, but we actually loved the little walk to the shed. Don’t come here if you are the kind of person that only enjoys dark, completely sound proof rooms or doesn’t love nature. The location and the home’s artistic, almost treehouse-like feeling are what makes this place so special, and the bathtub! Our family had a wonderful time here, spotting all kinds of wildlife, especially seals. The pebble beach, tide pools and sunsets over the water were magnificent. We biked all over the island and launched kayaks from the beach. Morning jogs to Shark Reef Sanctuary, followed by a refreshing dip in the cold sea were a highlight. The cupboards could use some organization/minimizing. Great place!
