The old potato store
Since the early 1930s, the office here on the dike has been a trading and transhipment point for domestic potatoes. Anything that was not sold directly to customers from here was shipped across the Elbe to the marketplaces of the Port of Hamburg.
The old operators were busy traders. So the office quickly became too small. It was used as a trading center until the early 1960s. Later they moved to neighboring Schleswig-Holstein. The family still delivers potatoes from there, the “Heide-Perle” to the entire Republic by forwarding agent.
What was left is the old office. Premises that were almost forgotten, partially spilled.
Over a hundred years had passed since the office was built when we decided to uncover and restore the premises. Mysterious bricked-up wall parts only tell the fragmentary story in fragments. There are small clues everywhere. At that time the office was still directly on the Elbe. The new dike only came to protect against storm surges, melt floods or ice displacement at the end of the 1990s. Until then, in the event of winter floods, it was entirely possible that clods from the Elbe ice rink had to be removed in order to gain access. At times the office was no longer accessible due to dry foot floods. The Elbe determined life here.
Let yourself be enchanted by the soft whisper of the stories. Listen to rolling potatoes drumming into the weighing pan. Hear how puffed quintuple sacks are packed. Moments of busy activity, of trade and gossip, of the smell of heavy cigars or even one or the other "Lütt un Lütt" after a day's work.
