Mombasa is an island connected to the rest of Kenya by road and ferries. Discover uncrowded tropical beaches perfect for diving and snorkelling, surfing, deep sea fishing, dolphin-spotting and everything else aquatic. The marine reserve encompasses Mombasa's north coast mainland beaches of Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu–these areas also have a large concentration of the hotels in Mombasa, so if you’re a water baby, you’re in luck. These areas—with its palm trees and clear waters—is also home to heaps of restaurants and much of Mombasa’s nightlife.

Back on Mombasa Island, visit the imposing garrison of Fort Jesus, built by the Portuguese in 1593 as a statement of power in this busy seafaring pocket of the Indian Ocean. It was fought over and changed hands during the centuries, and its thick walls are covered in ancient graffiti and inscriptions in Arabic, Swahili and several European languages.
