Cedar Lane Plantation dated back to early 1809

Luxurious 19th Century Home

On a hilltop overlooking 440 green acres, this charming plantation home has undergone a far-reaching historical restoration.  The original structure is composed of two wooden stories with two landings over a large brick lower ground floor featuring crude hand-hewn beams.
Cedar Lane has 4 Bedrooms, 5 beds, all with en-suite bathrooms and a large kitchen equipped with dual ranges and ample refrigeration.

Cedar Lane is a part of Cumberland Plantation history:

The Cedar Lane Plantation home is characterized by an irregular architectural design that contributed to it being listed in the National Register of Historical Places. The original structure that was completed in 1826 is composed of two wooden stories of four rooms and two landings over a large brick basement. The basement, easily the most historical part of the house, features crude hand-hewn beams.

In 1829, the home’s staircase was demolished and replaced by another a few feet away and a new wing was connected to the 1826 dwelling. Later, another wing was added to the house, increasing its mass and improving its proportions. Oddly, a second staircase was also installed that gives the impression that the building was divided into two separated living spaces accessed by two identical porch doorways.

Cedar Lane is situated on a colonial roadway (now New Kent Highway) extending from the vicinity of Richmond to Williamsburg. The Plantation occupies a crossroads with Poindexter Road, which once extended from St. Peter’s Parish Church to Criss Cross Plantation four miles to the south. The house presents a charming prospect on top of an abrupt rise in elevation that affords it a pleasant 360-degree view of the surrounding agricultural fields and distant wood lines.

The home is being fully restored and furnished to reflect the Civil War era; its quarter mile long entry has been planted with twin rows of cedar trees. Nearby, a fragment of a private cemetery is enclosed by a white picket fence and a small orchard to the rear of the residence evokes the sizeable fruit orchard which is said to have existed in the nineteenth century.

Cedar Lane, a long-standing Poindexter landholding, passed to William and Jacob Poindexter in 1782. Jacob was charged with 400 acres and William Poindexter was charged with 244 acres at that time. The original home, dating from 1826, is fully intact and now serves as the central component of today’s Cedar Lane.

Norwood Apperson, a Poindexter relation who owned Cedar Lane after the Civil War, wrote that during the war his mother was called to the top of the stairs by a Union soldier who claimed that four of her sons had been killed in the Battle of Seven Pines. She realized this was not a likely manner for relating such horrible news, so she said “You are lying and I hope you fall down those steps and break your neck!”

Always available by phone.

The plantation’s acres are great for hiking and horseback rides can be arranged. Please inquire for availability and details if you’re interested in hosting your wedding or event at Cedar Lane Plantation.
We are situated on a colonial roadway, now New Kent Highway. Local Saudè Creek Vineyards, the Gauthier Vineyard and the New Kent Winery can be reached within 10 minutes by car. Within approximately 30 minutes you will find the Muscarelle Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Colonial Williamsburg and Historic Jamestown. Kids will not want to miss a trip to the nearby Busch Gardens of Williamsburg. Golfers have their pick of over a dozen nearby courses.

Wonderful stay!
We enjoyed our stay at Cedar Lane. What a wonderful property and beautiful restoration of the home there. We were visiting family in New Kent and they all had memories of the property. I loved getting up to drink my coffee on the front porch and in the evening the kids playing ball on the front lawn. We will definitely stay again!

Beautiful property
We spent an idyllic holiday weekend at Cedar Lane with three generations, and it will be a trip we remember forever. We spent hours enjoying the expansive views from the porch and watching the kids play on the lawn, and went for daily runs on the paths behind the house. The house itself is beautifully restored and is full of antiques, Persian rugs and oil paintings. We did day trips to Richmond and local wineries. Families should be aware that all the bedrooms are in different parts of the house and the beds are very high, so it’s not great for young children (our 6-year-old twins thought it was fun, but if they were younger it would have been a problem). The kitchen is down a flight of brick stairs, which was tough for my senior parents, who also had problems with some of the bathrooms. And the kitchen is huge but doesn’t have a lot of supplies, so simple meals are best (we couldn’t find a casserole dish, waffle iron, or all the pans that we wanted. ) all minor quibbles. This was a wonderful stay.

The home was amazing and we appreciated the decor and specific details that were from the 1800’s. We felt in history in the home. The bedrooms with bathrooms were amazingly decorated and the kitchen was well stocked! Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Amazing stay
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cedar Lane. The home is absolutely gorgeous. I loved everything about this home. I especially liked that every room had its own personal bathroom. It made it easy for all 7 of us to get ready. We hosted my Mother's celebration of life while visiting family there. It turned out better then I could've expected. The home and grounds were large enough to host everyone. Check in and communication with the host was super easy. We definitely hope to be back again in the future.

Living history!
Our stay at the 1826 plantation house on Cedar Lane was both enjoyable and a learning experience. This National Historic Site is an amazing place to stay. The house is stocked with paintings and books telling the history of the house and the region. Don’t let the age of the house deter you. The kitchen is modern and equipped with top of the line appliances. All of the rooms have either central air conditioning or very effective wall mounted split units. The furniture is as shown on the Vrbo listing. Antique furniture that is comfortable. The beds are elegant and comfortable. Being halfway between Richmond and Williamsburg is a big plus. We took the children to the fantastic science museum in Richmond. Visits to Williamsburg, Yorktown and Jamestown were convenient. A full day trip to the wonderful Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach. Worked out too. We highly recommend staying here.

Wonderful Williamsburg Experience
My wife plus 2 couples stayed at Cedar Lane during our colonial Williamsburg visit. This historical home put us in the mood to enjoy our time in Williamsburg, just 30 minutes away & traffic free. The home is certainly old and historic but very comfortable and modern when it counted. Gas fireplaces (remote control start) in every room was a nice touch. Highly recommended!

Top notch!
The home and the grounds are beautiful. They have done a great job of restoring it to be comfortable but keeping the great historical feel to it. McKenzie is an excellent host. She helped us find the house in the middle of the night with no complaints and was always very friendly and helpful. By the way, some GPS apps will have trouble finding the house based on street address. Use these coordinates and you shouldn't have any trouble: 37.529989, -77.042089

Exceeded our expectations and then some!
We booked this property with participate in distance learning somewhere other than home the week of Christmas- but covid safe. Every single aspect of our experience was phenomenal. I saw a review about the wifi - we had two teens doing online learning/ zoom meetings, and I was running classes on zoom Monday and Tuesday- we had absolutely no issues with the internet at all. We were able to watch the Steelers game on tv Monday night with no problems, other than them losing :( Check in, check out, communication was perfect, timely and more than pleasant. I cannot begin to properly express our satisfaction with the property and experience. We already booked our next get away on this property and cannot wait to return!

Great for gathering
My husband and I hosted Thanksgiving at Cedar Lane this year and we couldn’t be more happy with how everything turned out! Our family loved it and couldn’t stop talking about the home, it’s “bones” and it’s updates. You can’t really see the beauty of the home with just the pictures, it’s so much better in person. We had no issues with checking in accessing the home. This location is perfect too; not too far from Williamsburg, VA (if you like the Prime Outlets)nor Richmond, VA ( if you like night life). The grounds are beautiful too, I’m a country girl and really appreciated being able to sit on the front porch with coffee along with my mom, we found it scenic. The fire places especially around this time of year was a great plus. The space in both the kitchen and dining room is what makes this home great for gatherings. There was more than enough space to cook and store all of our Thanksgiving Dinner. I found all the rooms to be nice and cozy ( I heard no complaints from the family members to stayed overnight, haha!!) I will say that everyone loved their showers and although I didn’t get to use my robe, I thought it was a very nice touch to have them in each room! I don’t want to make this review too long just know overall it’s a great stay, I definitely recommend and will most likely stay again. The only reason I gave the cleanliness 4 stars is because the bottom level could use some de-webbing. Property contact, McKenzie was helpful and responsive when needed. Thanks!

Overall good, but needs some work
The property is in a beautiful, rural setting, close to both Richmond and Williamsburg, and was a good launching point for our family vacation. As a historic home, it was lovely on the outside, and several of the interior rooms were well decorated and maintained. However, this property also leaves a lot to be desired as a vacation home, especially for the price. The Good: -Beds were comfortable and clean. The master suite was the best room in the house, and was tastefully decorated with period furniture -Kitchen was spacious, although not as well stocked as we were expecting (no kettle, almost no serving utensils, no corkscrew, etc). The three large refrigerators were a bonus for storing food and beverages for the week. -Quiet, rural location -MacKenzie was a breath of fresh air, and tried so hard to make things right. She was responsive, friendly, empathetic, patient and very kind. She was awesome! The Challenges -Check In was confusing. We called the number we were given to check in, but the person who answered only gave us the key box number and then hung up. We couldn't reach her/him again on that number, either by text or phone. It wasn't until MacKenzie reached out to give me her number did we have any contact with a property manager. -Lack of efficient internet or TV. While the description of the house says it has TV and internet, we spent the entire 9 days without either. The internet connection is a joke, and the TV did not work. MacKenzie tried to remedy the situation, but when a new TV was finally installed on Friday (the end of our stay), it was so locked down we could only access a couple of channels. We were told that we could 'stream' channels, but that never matieralized during our stay. -The handle in the shower in one of the bathrooms came off the second day we were there. It was not repaired yet when we left (after 9 days). -The basement bedroom is noisy and bug-filled. Thankfully, we did not have to use it as a living quarters, but guests should be aware that the fourth bedroom is in the lowest level, right next to the kitchen. -Might consider putting blackout curtains in the upstairs loft room - there is a cell tower across the field that has a continuous blinking light that shines in that room all night long. Overall, we gave this property four stars because of MacKenzie, but really feel it only deserves 3.5 stars.

Great House & Location
We met up with friends at Cedar Lane for a long week end. House is like new inside even though it is well over 200 years old. Fantastic kitchen, comfortable beds. Great front porch to sit and watch the sunset. We cooked in every night and had a great time. Already talking about going back!
