Booked unaware of renovations.. bathrooms dirty and very tired rooms, dirty in grooves of dressing tables, shower cubicles and floors with years of use showing. No lounge to sit in just had to use bedroom when not out. Staff lovely felt quite sorry for them as complaints made directly to them. Front of hotel all boarded up.. wouldn’t have booked for 2 nights if had known. Breakfast was lovely though. That was a saving grace. I think a reduction in price should have been offered once arrived but just got told this is what we have and an apology. We had already paid upfront too. Very sad as it was a weekend we were looking forward too.

Lovely people, outdated facilities.
People were lovely and would do anything to help. Location is fantastic. However the rooms are simply outdated, stained carpets, old furnature etc. The beds were particularly bad, could tell the mattresses had been used for many many years by the permanent dips and lack of comfort.

Mid Week stay
Overall a good, comfortable 2 night stay at what is a well established friendly hotel within a rather old and tired Victorian building. My room was on top floor and had velux windows so could not open. It is the height of summer and I was given a fan, but unfortunately room was constantly hot and humid. Breakfasts were included and were faultless. Thank you

Good and ideal location
For one, budget conscious person travelling alone it's always great to find a single room allowing a saving. At The Royal Whitley Bay right in mid-July, in the middle of the seafront promenade area, I paid only £35 a night incl a lovely, large breakfast each day with fresh fruit, juice, coffee, yoghurt, cereals and a gorgeous, very large full English in a nice little breakfast room. Wow. I know the little single room I stayed in from many years ago - old, unrenovated, the same as it was & good for me. It is clean with a good ensuite with lots of instant hot water in the shower. The old, much-loved seaside hotel is being renovated - for the moment that's all downstairs so there is no bar or restaurant after breakfast for some time. I always liked The Royal. The people there are really nice. I was able to leave two pieces of luggage after check-out to take advantage of the sun at the seaside for a good five hours or so. The hotel is perfectly situated on the seafront with a few restaurants & bars around in this quieter end, five minutes walk from the very busy Spanish City vicinity. The Newcastle Metro is just over 10 minutes walk. Thanks to all. I hope to be back.

Whitley Bay weekend bolt hole
We were a group of friends on a weekend trip to Whitley Bay. Booked the hotel for all of us, upon arrival found it was undergoing renovations. There were no communal facilities and the front was partially boarded up.its all a bit tired but hopefully after the refurbishment it will be much improved. Having said that the staff were lovely the breakfast was as good as any 5 star hotel and the location is excellent. So I would say post refurbishment give it a go.

Always excellent and great value.
Traditional Hotel, from the revolving door, to the friendly reception, Holly (in training), crisp linens and comfortable bed. Katie & Liz in the bar, fun and efficient in equal measure. It's terrific value and i wouldn't stay anywhere else. Considering it's in the city centre, deathly quiet at night. Access to rail and Metro is excellent. Under a minute from back door to platforms.

I had the same issues that were previously raised in other reviews. I was in the single room that had a mouldy/water stained window blind and half a curtain pole that was just hanging on so you couldn't close the curtains. There was a faint smell of dampness in the room which may have been coming from the blind but I didn't want to check too much. The bed sank in the middle as I sat on it. I did get an email when I checked out saying that they are doing a big renovation this year (which seemed to have started as the cladding at the front of the building was all off) but it really doesn't cost a lot to change a blind and curtain pole. That would at least show that the hotel is reading the reviews and trying to make a small difference. Good shower and right at the beach front. Two minutes walk from Spanish City and about ten minutes into town. The staff however were lovely and seemed to try to go out of their way to help.

Stayed as a solo traveller for a gig at the local theatre. Hotel has a great location on the sea front, with many restaurants close by. The town centre is only a short walk away too. My single room was quite big, clean but sparsely furnished - comfortable enough though. TV and shower were decent so couldn't complain. Staff are top notch, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was outstanding with top quality ingredients - far better than a few 4 star hotels I've been in recently.

Staff was nice enough, but there’s plenty that guests need to know about: the “hotel” is like a maze - so many random stairs, turns, and doors just to find your room. It’s a very strange set up. And it’s loud everywhere because the floor is unbearably creaky. The rooms are weird: creaky floors, broken headboards, tv is like 20 inch or less, bathrooms are missing towel racks, and you hear everything from other guests that are walking around trying to find their rooms. It’s a fine stay if you’re knowing what you’re really getting yourself into, but it should be quite a bit cheaper in my opinion.
