This rustic pioneer old homeplace has been passed down through 4 generations of the Calhoun Family. It sits creek side along banjo branch and is perfect for a quick getaway with plenty of privacy and tranquility. Located just 1mile to town, groceries, restaurants, CVS and more. We have preserved and protected this property in a beautiful hollow filled with laurels, rhododendrons, and native fauna with dirt gravel roads throughout the hollow. There are many streams' creeks, and springs that flow throughout the property with a large creek called "Banjo Branch" and waterfall flowing directly in front of the home in the front yard. I encourage our guests to paint a rock and hide it in the creek for others to find while playing in the water or searching for Gold and Gems. We also have walking trails and a scavenger hunt in the guest book and encourage exploring our property.
Our Family home place is over 100 years old built in the late 1890's by my great-grandfather, Starlin Calhoun. It is one of the oldest homesteads still in operation in Avery County, NC.
It has a master bedroom downstairs with a Queen Size bed. Upstairs their is (2) Queen Beds and (3) Twin Beds.
There is (1) full bathroom with a walk-in shower and (1) half bathroom both downstairs. I provide towels and wash cloths for guests and all Linens are provided as well. The cabin has a full Kitchen with electric stove/oven, all utensils, pots, pans, dishes, 10 cup coffee maker, a Keurig coffee maker, blender, toaster, microwave, refrigerator, and automatic dishwaher. The Den has an electric Organ, soap stone wood burning fireplace, Cable Direct TV 100+ channels, WIFI internet service, and board games from old and new eras. The cabin is Heated by the fireplace, electric heaters & baseboard heaters. NO AC, it's Air conditioned by Nature with open windows/screens and fans. (it rarely gets above 70 here). There is a covered front porch with rockers and bench seating to listen to the sounds of the creek & waterfall in the front yard, and a tin roof for the sounds of the rain to lull you to sleep, outdoor fire pit, charcoal grill, quite peaceful and secluded on a gravel road. **** Four Wheel Drive or All Wheel Drive is needed in winter months and snow season (Oct. - Mar.) to get to the cabin and to drive on the roads up here! *** We offer lots of roads and trails for walking, hiking, and exploring. We have made many memories to last a lifetime here while getting back to basics of life and finding the meaning of Self Serenity. If your looking for new and modern this is NOT IT! The cabin is made of wood and bark, covered with a Tin roof, has a 40 year old honey comb bee hive between the old wooden chimney and newer stone chimney and has a woodsy musky odor at times. (We have attempted to get rid of the bees in the chimney now and so far so good! No honeybees now.) Nonetheless, it's still a place of peace and quiet that you can't get anywhere else. I take great pride in making sure that the place stays properly cleaned, sanitized and treated for each guests prior to their arrival. However, with wooden floors, wooden walls, being in the woods, and so forth there is going to be the occasional cobweb, bee, mouse, boomer, moth or bug that sometimes reappear somewhere during your visit. We do have an exterminator that treats the home on a regular monthly schedule. This place is like stepping back in time to a simpler era where phones were not invented, family meant everything, and conversation was essential to our lives. If you ever visited a farm house, or had relatives that grew up in a rural setting you will appreciate this cabin and it's roots. If your a city mouse with champagne dreams and caviar wishes this will disappoint you. I'm sorry.
Almost everyone that visits can't wait to come back and we now have several families that have made this spot their annual tradition for bonding and escaping from the real world. People either love it or they hate it. Everybody is different in their expectations of a vacation rental cabin.
We hope you enjoy it's rich history, unique character, rustic charm and down to earth simplicity as much as we have over the last 100 years and look forward to sharing our little piece of heaven with you too.
