Nuku’alofa is the capital of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga. The country is made up of over 170 islands, with Nuku’alofa sitting on the largest island of Tongatapu. The majority of Tonga’s population lives on this gorgeous island, and the few visitors that take the time to discover this stunning jewel are rewarded with the friendly atmosphere, a relaxed way of life so typical for the islands, incredible water sports, glorious beaches, and a tremendous selection of great things to do and see. Nuku’alofa is an excellent base for those wishing to enjoy the beauty of Tonga. There are good facilities for visitors, we have a terrific selection of hotels in Nuku’alofa, the town is easy to explore by foot, and the public transportation system makes getting out and about very easy!
The culture on the island is very different to others, and you can really take a break from your normal routine and get to live life like a local. Visit Talamahu market to experience the hustle and bustle of daily life and see a wide range of locally made goods. It’s a great place to pick up some delicious seasonal produce, as well as souvenirs, crafts, art, accessories and clothes. To learn more about Nuku’alofa’s unique culture, you can visit the Tongan National Cultural Centre, which is home to a large array of exhibits, displays, and local crafts. Everything is located inside interesting traditional buildings. Another of the main attractions in the city is old Royal Palace. Constructed from wood, the walls are white and the roof is red. It is the official home of the Royal Family, and although visitors are not allowed into the grounds, it can be easily seen from outside.
The beaches are a tropical oasis, with beautiful sands and sparkling waters. You can sunbathe, swim, and surf, as well as admire stunning coral and marine life with a diving or snorkelling adventure. Other places within easy reach to visit include the many royal tombs at Mu’a and the fascinating blowholes at Houma.
