Numerous destinations: You could visit Lecce, 'queen” of the Baroque and the entire Salento (Otranto, Gallipoli, etc).
Alberobello with ancient Trulli - city centre, (Trullis have a round, conical roof, built in dry stone method of construction) Ostuni (worth seeing during daytime as well as at night), Ceglie Messapica, Martina Franca, Cisternino, Locorotondo, Monopoli with its charming harbour, Castel del Monte, Trani in Bari and many more. All towns with very unique characteristics.
With large stone-paved streets, stairways and small staircases, arches, handicraft shops and the permanently white walls that remain in the memory of the visitor. Castellana Grotte, famous for its caves, which wind through the rock for miles. Near San Vito Dei Norman is the cave of 'San Biagio' with frescoes from the 12th century, the cave of 'Montevicoli', rich in stalactites and stalagmites and the cave of 'Zinzulusa'. Nearby is also Egnatia, a city from the Bronze Age.
On request there are diving and sailing lessons, boat rentals and boat moorings (Lega Navale Italiana) in Villanova. Scuba diving base in Villanova with tank filling. Furthermore, sales and repair of spare parts are also available.
The city of Ostuni was officially awarded in 1998 with the title 'Art City' for its historical, artistic and natural beauties. Ostuni is the travel destination of everyone who appreciates the combination of culture and environment. The history of the city of Ostuni dates back to the past, Ostuni may also have a heritage that is, at least partly, yet to be discovered. The historic old town, just the monument and the place of historic past, has an extraordinary flair. The old medieval city centre, a maze of small streets, arches and alleys, which is surrounded by the imposing city walls, has so far remained intact. The white labyrinth painted with limestone - which gives Ostuni the name 'White City' - always changes with the warm ochre colour of the stones of the ancient palazzi, churches, monasteries and imaginative portals.
Gastronomy : This simple (so called) ordinary kitchen, which is, however, rich in scents and colours and above all designed with a good taste, is an expression of the primitive life of the native population, who understood to enhance traditional cuisine and also to be proud of it. The flour products in Ostuni’s kitchen are of primary importance: Bread, which is still baked in a wooden oven and 'Friselle', 'Puccia', 'Tarallini' (donut- shaped bread pastry), and then homemade pasta, like 'Stracciodde' (orecchiette), 'Strascenate' and 'Lajanedde', all varieties are made from durum wheat flour and flavoured with tomato sauce and cacioricotta (known here as 'caserecotta'), sometimes also with 'recotta ascanta' (ricotta forte).
Events: In Ostuni numerous events take place distributive throughout the year instead, associated with folklore and sacred rites, such as San Biagio, la Festa del Barco, la Madonna della Nova, Madonna della Stella, etc. Most events and highlights are in August, 'Agosto ostunese' , a collective term for the various artistic and cultural events, sporting events and trade shows in the summer months , has already reached a certain level of recognition.
Among the most important celebrations in the summer is 'la Festa di Sant'Oronzo', a festival dedicated to the patron saint Oronzo and takes place every year from 25th to 27th August. The festival involves several local and temporal conditions. The highlight of this festival every year is 'Cavalcade di Sant'Oronzo' (ride). It is a historical parade where horses carry richly decorated saddle blankets and the riders wear red costumes with white arabesques. This parade has historical origins and dates back to the mid-17th Century, when in Italy plague spread around and Oronzo, the patron saint of the city, Ostuni was finally relieved from the plague. 'Fiera di Sant'Oronzo' takes place regularly on the days mentioned above. This tradition also extends far into the past. It is traded at 'Fiera', this huge market with animals, and handicraft items are also being offered for sale, which are used in rural areas even at present.
Coasts and beaches: From the hills down to the sea, you can find olive groves along the marina as far as the eyes can see. Olives, they are the crops of Ostuni agriculture, which shimmer as silvery- green in the light, a huge colour contrast with the intense blue of the sky, which finally merges with the sea at the horizon.
The coast of Marina di Ostuni extends over about 20 km in length. Coves and rocky cliffs alternate with each other and are surrounded by the greenery of Mediterranean vegetation. The visitor can choose between a white, fine sandy beach and rocks. In any case, he will admire the diverse sea beds in the area.
When approaching Ostuni, coming from the north, one first discovers the dunes that are partially covered by the beautiful shrubs of fragrant Mediterranean herbs. Here lie the beaches of Lido Bosco Verde, Lido Morelli and Pilone. The latter is a holiday resort completely submerged in green with a long sandy beach. A former watchtower from the 16th Century, la Torre di San Leonardo, stands right on the seashore.
The nearest resort to the south is Rosa Marina, which is one of the most exclusive among the coasts - a collection of whitewashed summer villas, which spread impressively over a wide area. This is followed by Monticelli, a settlement with a quiet atmosphere, which has even traces of the Bronze Age and Diano Marina, a small village, which is still in the development phase. In Villanova, once known as Petrolla and geographically the centre of the coastline, lies the picturesque ancient fishing harbour that has historical significance. The ancient fortress in the harbour of 16th Century was controlled by fishermen as well as by promising swimmers from trans-boundary waters.
In the long sandy beaches in the first section of the coast of Ostuni, the bays of Gorgognolo and in particular Costa Merlata follow, as it were, lace-fringed coast. Then come Santa Lucia and Torre Pozzella, where many small bays follow each other and a watchtower from the 16th Century stands. The last incredibly beautiful enclave on the coast is Lamaforca with a number of beaches. The internationally famous holiday club Valtur is also found there.
