World Class Garden Residence

Located on the rugged and picturesque Puna coast of the Big Island, Hale Mohalu Guesthouse is a garden residence in paradise. The lush and verdant district of Puna provides the idyllic setting for this unique botanical retreat.
Situated on twenty-two acres with about 10 acres of manicured and well tended gardens. The property is filled with an extensive palm and bamboo collection along with orchids and fruit trees. The guesthouse commands sweeping ocean views to the east where the sun rises from the Pacific Ocean bathing the expansive garden and stone terrace in the early morning light...If you can pull yourself away, venture out to the nearby geothermal warm pools or the black sand beach for a sunrise swim.

Beautiful Mango wood floors, custom made furnishings from Bali and exceptional art combine to create an experience that is truly unique in the world of vacation rentals. The residence is nestled into a private botanical garden with extensive palm, bamboo, orchid and bromeliad collections, all staged within the context of manicured sweeping lawns and ocean vistas.

Estate managers are onsite, comfortably situated away from the main residence to ensure your utmost privacy.

Fresh tropical floral arrangements, all gathered from our exquisite garden, will greet you throughout the entire house. Beautiful linens, comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen await your arrival.

Amazing garden, quiet retreat.
Quiet, ocean view off in the distance, amazing sunrises. It's a massive garden. Big enough to have a run through for a few laps. With edibles and flowers, the design took vision and tons of work. The house itself is great. We had a few unlucky power issues, but the house manager was so responsive, polite and pleasant it didn't bother us much. We are already scheming to come back here.

My family and I spent a wonderful week at Hale Muhalo. The property is even more beautiful in person and the house was clean, modern and extremely comfortable for a family of five. Michael is a wonderful host and the care he and his team put into the place really shows. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this to anyone who is looking for peace and tranquility on their trip to the Big Island.

A few days in paradise
Where to start. The pictures of this property do not do it justice. This beautiful cottage is right in the middle of the most breath taking botancial garden you will ever find on a map. You have the entire 21 acres to ah at. A different view out of every room that all walk out to a amazing deck area. We never really wanted to leave the property but when we did we found amazing black sand beach near by and some really cool hot pots. The house was spotless and everything works they way you would hope. Night time it has just enough outdoor lighting to entertain with . I cant wait to stay again.

Zen Experience
We stayed mid Feb 2024. Girl trip! There were 5 of us. We had an absolutely amazing time. Vacation coffee on the lanai was the best! Distant ocean view from lanai was stunning @ sunrise! The grounds are immaculately maintained & so lush. The birds and wildlife welcomed you each morning. Location was central and easy to get to all the sites around Hilo. The home was very comfortable. Beds comfy. House well equipped with anything you would need. One thing I would say is bring the deck cushions under the eaves in the evening so they aren’t wet when you want to sit out in the morning. It is rainforest and were wet every day. It was a bit challenging to find the house in pitch darkness at 11pm our 1st night. Michael was welcoming & timely with communication. Wish we made time to take advantage of his tour of the property. I hope to stay again in the future.

Beautiful Sunrise Location, Beautiful Grounds
This has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Before we arrived we were planning on exploring around Pahōa and Hilo, the moment we arrived we knew we had to change our plans and just stay at the property. It was perfect, Michael was great and gave us a tour of the grounds. Fresh fruit everywhere! Beautiful sunrise. It was so relaxing, we really want to come back!

Stunningly beautiful property
The house is literally situated in the middle of a botanical garden. If you want a peaceful getaway from the typical Hawaii tourism, this is it. The property isn’t too far away from other towns but seems remote, is quiet. We saw Hawaiian hawks, heard coqui frogs and were joined by curious day geckos.

Paradise
House is older, nothing fancy, but clean, comfortable and has everything you need. Property/setting is spectacular. Picked fresh oranges, tangerines, mandarins, avocados and limes every morning, and mangoes and papaya when ripe. Other fresh produce available when ripe. Michael (on site caretaker) is helpful and super friendly. Enjoyed the kitties. Location is a bit out of the way so must have a car. All in all, it was a great two weeks. With much gratitude.

A paradise on earth
This property was absolutely phenomenal. Meticulously maintained land that made this a true oasis. The home was thoughtfully designed and a true respite after a day of activities. I could have easily just stayed on the property the whole time. Michael was so nice and informative about the care that went into the development of the property. The flowers and the fruit trees heightened the stay, it was such an amazing experience! There truly isn’t a better place to stay on the Big Island. We all hated to leave.

Haven of tranquility
We stayed in this beautiful house for 5 nights with our family of 5 (kids 6, 8 and 10). After a few busy weeks on other Hawaiian Islands, this 'House of Relaxation & Restoration' was perfect to wind down. The garden is absolutely incredible and the house was super clean and decorated with a lot of attention to detail (and fresh flowers from the garden everywhere). We were lucky for the lychees to be in season and loved picking them fresh from the many trees, clearly one of the highlights for us :-). While the house is remote and there is a bit of driving to 'civilization' (e.g. groceries, restaurants, sights etc.), we would not want to miss the experience of staying at The Hale Mohave and can recommend it 100%.

Slice of heaven
The house and property are even lovelier in person, which I didn’t think possible before we arrived. Michael, the property manager, is a great host: friendly, responsive, and available but also incredibly sensitive to privacy and space. We had lovely cross breezes and the temperature was very comfortable throughout our stay. The kitchen is well furnished, and we were able to cook several delicious meals from farmers market finds. The house is solar powered, with guides for managing power usage. It was something we enjoyed trying (our first experience that wasn’t camping), but if you are a ‘run everything at once’ family, may not be for you. We were conservative and attentive in our use and had zero issues. We enjoyed picking & eating fresh lychees and seeing all the gorgeous plants. It was very much staying in our own botanical garden. The location is a bit out of town, so depending on your destinations (if you choose to leave the property), you might have a bit of a drive…30 minutes to Hilo for us most mornings, afternoons were worse (wrecks). Still, it was one of those that sticks with me, and I wanted to return before we’d even left.

This is the second time that we have had the pleasure of calling this beautiful place home even though it was only for a few days. While the house is really well equipped and beautifully furnished, it is the large terrace set out in a spectacular tropical landscape that sets this listing apart. After a day of touring we would gather there with a glass of wine and watch the saffron finches flit through the garden.
