Quiet, Well-Equipped Adirondack Cabin on 50 private acres with multi-use trails

This pristine relaxing retreat was built to view the sun, the moon, wildlife, and the trees. Nestled in a mature, private pine forest, this well cared for property boasts abundant wildlife and a network of walking and skiing/snowshoeing trails which take you past wetlands, cliffs and a variety of forest types.

For even more info., visit our website as we're one of the most unique vacation rental properties in the Adirondacks.

Private and secluded, yet centrally located, Camp Hatteras is located near Paul Smiths College. You’ll be in one of the most varied wilderness areas of the park. We’re located in the middle of some of the Adirondack’s most dependable snow for cross-country skiing, with abundant groomed and backcountry trails nearby and out your front door. You’ll be 20 minutes to Titus Mountain Ski Center, Saranac Lake or Malone; 35 minutes to Lake Placid and its Olympic venues; 50 minutes to Whiteface Mountain. The Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks (the Wild Center) is 40 minutes away.

Camp Hatteras has three bedrooms and sleeps up to 8 people. Two of the bedrooms have two twin beds each and a third bedroom has a queen. An open loft has a futon, which can be folded open for another person or two. Two bathrooms with showers make sure that no one is waiting. There is a complete laundry room for those making longer stays. There are toys for younger children to discover, and a high chair and “potty” for toddlers.

A wrap-around deck has a propane grill and picnic table in a screened porch. Bring some water jugs with you, as this 500’ deep well delivers the freshest, tastiest mountain water that you could ever want. You’ll want to take some home. There is a nice campfire spot for summer/winter time marshmallow roasts or quiet fire gazing. The glass front woodstove sheds a warming glow across the great-room’s hardwood floors in the winter.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a microwave, electric oven and range, a dishwasher, and all of the things that make cooking healthy, hearty meals possible.

Firewood is supplied for our winter guest’s heating comfort, and a reasonable amount of campfire wood is available in the summer as well. The driveway travels about 200 yards in from the main road and is well plowed with plenty of parking. If you’d rather not heat with a woodstove, the electric baseboard heat is always there to keep you warm.

In the warmer months, there are nearby trails which are excellent for mountain biking with both backcountry roads and single-track. Designated horseback riding trailheads are less than a mile away. A “Wild and Scenic Study River,” the Osgood, flows nearby with put-in and take-outs within a couple of miles of your driveway. Drop-off and pick-up arrangements can be made. This is a “must paddle” for those interested in wildlife and scenery. Many have spotted the Bald Eagle who has a nest at the river’s edge. We are surrounded by many great fishing spots. And a resident moose if often seen in our area.

Your hosts, Bob and Sheila, are a former professional wilderness guide, and a life-long resident of the Paul Smith’s area. Between the two of them, good advice—connecting you to great experiences and unique destinations—is as close to a “sure thing” as you can get. The temporary use of their brains is complimentary!

Great Parents Weekend!
We were up to visit our son for his first parents’ weekend as a Paul Smith’s student. Bob and Sheila were fantastic! They kept an open line of communication with us the entire time, made sure we didn’t need anything, and even let us know to listen for the barred owl! They have paid attention to every single detail. There are so many things to do on the property that we would never have had to leave! The trails around the property that take you to the bog, the stargazing spot, the treehouse, the climbing wall, the sugar, shack, the eldest pine, and everything else were very well groomed. It made for very enjoyable walks for all of us, including the grandparents! The house is well appointed with anything you may need. With being so close to the college, it was very convenient, yet we felt very secluded in our spot. It was a fantastic weekend that we will always remember, and we definitely plan on going back!

Fantastic location and great getaway house
My family vacationed here in the summer. We love this house and the overall location. Lots to do with all the VIC trails nearby, canoeing/kayaking, rail trail cycling. Bob and Sheila are great hosts and the house is well equipped. Particularly nice is the outdoor area where you can enjoy an evening fire and view the stars. We all came back happy and restored thanks to this warm home and the natural beauty of the area.

Woodsy Delight
We had a lovely stay at this home in the woods in July. The hosts were very helpful. We hiked nearby, there is swimming down the road, we had dinner and watched fireworks in Saranac Lake. There was a nice outdoor screen porch for dinner. A big inside table for board games after supper. The area cooled off at night and there were plenty of fans. We hope to come back in the Fall sometime.

The Perfect Getaway
My wife and I enjoyed a long late-summer/early fall stay at this secluded, well appointed base camp in the woods. The hosts, Sheila and Bob, were extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating in all of their recommendations, and keep the property and its surroundings clean, comfortable and inviting but still natural and pristine. The property is vast and definitely worth exploring with many trails and discoveries to make. The location is a perfect jumping off point for hiking, canoeing, and getting away from it all, but still a quick drive to civilization to get supplies and maybe have a meal out. It's the perfect escape.

Perfect isolation!
We spent a week staying at this lovely cabin. It was well equipped and welcoming. All the details to make the vacation easy - hiking and paddling guides. A wonderful outdoor fire pit with ample wood and seating. We especially liked the location- easy access to great hiking and easy to manage safe covid social practices. Saranac lake managing exceptionally well, better than lake placid in our opinion (which was pretty busy close to the weekend). Lovely place, lovely location and hosts.

Sweet cabin!
We loved our stay! The cabin was super clean and its location wonderfully private. It is conveniently located near Lake Placid and all the hiking, fishing, and myriad attractions in that area. Sheila is very knowledgeable about all the great places to hike and fish that you may not find in any guide books. The owners were also extremely kind in spending time locating a very important valuable we left behind! Thank you all so much- God bless!

Camp Hatteras
Camp Hatteras was an excellent choice for our family. The location was as expected, the house was clean and the property was just outstanding. Sheila was a great host, very friendly and made our family right at home. We walked the property, saw all the buildings and were very impressed with the lean-to. We would definitely stay there again.

Fall Foliage Magic
Sheila is the sweetest host ever! When arriving to the cabin we were blown away by the beauty of not only the house but the property. The trails on the property are gorgeous. Something that was extremely neat was the fire pit that had a tarp over the wood, a lighter, and a paper with lighting instructions for guests who dont know how to start a fire! The homemade syrup was delicious! This place really felt like home. Sheila provides so many magazines about what there is to do in the adirondacks. She also made a binder of her favorite places to go whether it be hikes or restaurants... this was so helpful. It is close driving to so many activities. We drove 50 minutes to the high falls gorge, 10 minutes to The Vic which has some awesome hikes. 30 minutes to Azure another beautiful hike. The town of saranac lake is very cute and very close as well. I cant wait to come back!!

Genuine Adirondack Experience
Congratulations on finding this amazing cabin. If its free on your dates, book now. There is nothing more Adirondack then staying amongst the pines on 30 acres at a place that has its own sugar shack(meaning they make maple syrup). Not only that the family is well versed in the area, and can easily help point you in the right direction... This is a genuine Adirondack treasure, dont pass this one up!

Had a great time at Camp Hatteras!
My fiance and I had a great time at Camp Hatteras. We enjoyed camp fires most nights of the week, and enjoyed exploring the property. We had many nights of stargazing, and even got up early on Saturday to enjoy the sunrise over the bog where we saw a dozen Canada geese take flight at the crack of dawn. We ventured to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake and hiked Mount Azure which was a quick half hour drive from Camp Hatteras. We had a blast on the go karts down Hobart road, and took our time getting lost in a corn maze after that. Make sure to take time to check out The Shamrock, an unassuming but awesome bar and restaurant only about 20 minutes away. The cabin was well equipped and clean upon our arrival. There are plenty of board games to enjoy up in the loft on a rainy day, and a tv although we never bothered to turn it on. Although the cabin is set back in the woods away from the road, there is still quite a bit of "road noise" from traffic going by on route 30. To me, that is the ONLY "minus" to this place. Sheila was very personable over the phone and by e-mail and was quick to answer any questions we had. We would recommend Camp Hatteras to anyone and hope to stay here again!
