A comfortable, self-contained suite in a restored 19th-century vila (RRAL 980)

Comfortable, modern suite on the ground floor of a completely restored 19th-century villa in rural São Miguel, Azores. The suite features a large bedroom and a fire place in the living room.

At the base of the Sete Cidades volcano and on the edge of the town of Capelas, Vila Alegre is only a short drive from north and south coast beaches, as well as the island's main city, Ponta Delgada. Once our family’s summer home, Vila Alegre has been completely renovated. It was our dream to blend the form and character of a traditional Azorean country home with modern comforts.

Enjoy carefully restored antique furniture as well as a new mattresses and sofas. With our wonderful temperate climate, a wood burning fireplace and electric heaters warms the suite during winter stays; thick stone walls and tile keep the suite cool in the summer. With respect to sound, the suite is extremely well insulated, with concrete between floors guaranteeing privacy and eliminating the sound bleed between the suites. The suites includes WIFI, cable TV in various languages, as well as secure parking within the traditional stone walls of the property

Enjoy easy walks to local shops, country lanes and full access to the property's serene gardens. At Vila Alegre, our beautiful gardens, walkways, benches and gazebo are all around you. Enjoy our covered outdoor barbecue patio and many spaces in the gardens for relaxation, contemplation, or play.

At Vila Alegre we welcome people from all around the world and all walks of life. Whether you're looking for a romantic weekend getaway, a longer stay in the country, or a relaxing family vacation, Vila Alegre is a spectacular, one-of-a-kind home base for your stay in São Miguel. Public transport passes directly in front of Vila Alegre for the short ride south into Ponta Delgada or north into Capelas.

Remarkable Refuge!
We were more than happy to have discovered Vila Alegre in the countryside outside of Ponta Delgada. It was beautiful, peaceful, and an amazing place to have been our home base for 5 days in Sao Miguel. Antonio was extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and willing to answer questions to help guide our itinerary while there. We can't say enough good things about our experience there, and we definitely plan to return!

I honestly cannot say enough about Antonio‘s property. This place was literally magical. The house was beautiful, amazing roomie. He had tons of antique furniture that just set the tone of the place and made it so comfortable homey and beautiful. And oh my goodness what can I say about the garden that man was out there every day tending to his property and keeping the gardens in shape and man was a beautiful. to be able to come home after a long day and look out over the gardens and see all the birds and hear all the birds and how beautiful his property was. It was amazing and I’m so glad I picked it. It was the best place I could’ve possibly stayed in. To say it was beautiful is an understatement. It is absolutely magical.

A charming homey stay in a restored vila. The gardens are endless and lush, planted and lovingly cared for by Antonio. This was our refuge after 2 weeks of travel in urban Portugal. It refreshed us, body and soul. Will come back!

Authentic Azores!
When we arrived Antonio was there to greet us and show us the apt. He also graciously supplied breakfast fixings including; local cheese, buns, fresh eggs, fruit and coffee. Such a welcome treat after an early flight. He was also very accommodating and allowed us to check in early and leave a little later than normal. We can’t say enough about our host! The apt is deceptively spacious with nice little touches like fresh flowers from his garden. Antonio explained the house had been his original family home. We were greeted by chickens and rooster each morning (they were kind and didn’t make noise until we were awake). Weather was a little bit of everything while we were there so i recommend dressing in layers. This was a wonderful local Azores experience and we loved all our adventures on the island.

Wonderful stay
Just returned yesterday from the beautiful island of Sao Miguel. This was our third trip and once again it did not disappoint. I can’t give Antonio enough praise for making it so enjoyable! From the treats that were left for us to enjoy to the sunroom where we had our morning coffee and a glass of wine at night, he made sure we were comfortable after returning from a day of sightseeing. We always looked forward to feeding the chickens in the morning before heading out to enjoy our day. The gardens are impeccably maintained and fun to walk around and discover new things. The villa is centrally located on the island and it makes it so easy to travel. Thank you, Antonio…we hope to return someday soon to visit! Don’t hesitate to book the villa!

Garden Villa Enjoyment
It may take a long review but I will try to be succinct. First, Antonio is exceptionally gracious and hospitable. He introduced my husband and I to food specific to Sao Miguel. Oh the bread, cheese and pineapple are delicious. Antonio was generous to stock the frig with milk, eggs, cheese, bread, pineapple, coffee, and other staples. He helped to guide us to shopping, dining, and touring in his community. Second, his home was like staying in a fairytale. The villa was beautiful and authentic to the culture. It was spacious. Much bigger than the pictures. Very clean and comfortable. It was stocked with all the necessities like being home. Lastly, the garden was beautiful and much larger than imagined. My husband and I enjoyed exploring the gardens, plants and trees. We chuckled with the baby chicks running around. In conclusion, my husband and I are so happy we stayed at this garden villa. With meeting Antonio, we feel we have a new friend or extended family in Sao Miguel. We definitely recommend this villa to friends, family, or anyone considering this VRBO option. Enjoy!

Beautiful place!
Antonio was so welcoming and gave us tons of tips on where to go in the Azores. The property had everything we needed from washer to dishwasher and he had left us local food to try after the long plane ride. The location was in a small town but we easily drove to destinations all over the island. And the garden is beautiful!

Antonio’s home was perfect in every way. The location was easy to drive to all parts of Sao Miguel. The apartment was larger than the photos show and fully equipped for all needs. Antonio was helpful, gracious and easy to contact if we had any questions. He greeted us with flowers from his beautiful garden and food from the Azores. I especially loved sitting in the sun room every morning with my coffee. Highly recommend!!

A rare and beautiful location to call home for 11 days. We could easily spend another month here. We are here in February, Sao Miguel’s “deepest winter” but it was perfect. 16 to 18 degrees in a well loved garden with hundreds of flowers, trees, avocados, lemons and oranges. We will be back. It’s a great location to explore the entire island and the host took time with us to answer any questions and suggest options. Thank you Antonio

A wonderful choice for your stay in Sao Miguel
We absolutely loved our stay here. We stayed for the first 5 days near Nordeste and the next 5 days here in Capelas and I’d say this location was the best for touring around the island - a quick 10-15 minutes to Ponta Delgada by car and less than half hour to Sete Cidades or Furnas. Most of the sights are in the middle or west side of the island. The house itself is beautiful. It’s large, we’ll furnished and spotless. The highlight of my stay here was the glassed in porch area at the back. It was quite large (about 10x12’). I started every morning here with a coffee overlooking the beautiful gardens and ended each day with a glass of wine. It was stunning and peaceful. Antonio was a wonderful host with a welcome platter of fruit and some baked goods, which included the island bakery specialty “bolos” - delicious. There was also coffee, tea, milk and cooking basics like oil and spices in the kitchen. We were just outside the main area of Capelas so it was easy to come and go - plus private parking, which was a bonus! You cannot go wrong renting this home. Thanks Antonio for your wonderful hospitality!!!

Retreat in Paradise
We very much enjoyed our stay in this spacious suite just outside the town of Capelas. It is a great location to explore the island. Easy access to the south side of the island as well as the North. Capelas is a short 3 minute drive where there is a grocery store and bakery. The suite has a fully equipped kitchen and is furnished with beautiful antiques. It was incredibly comfortable and quiet, and we loved the sun room. This space, with floor to ceiling windows, slides open to a beautiful, well-loved garden. It was wonderful to have breakfast each morning looking out to this tropical paradise. We hope to be back again to experience tranquility in nature once again. Thank you Antonio for opening your beautiful home.

Perfect!
We cannot adequately describe just how amazing this property really is. The online pictures offer just a hint of what is to be found when you open that gate. The gardens are a paradise of plantings with little alcoves of awesomeness. It was like a treasure hunt. Everything was enclosed with tall gorgeous hedges of camellia. Our only regret is to have missed their glorious blooms. The villa is a one bedroom with a full kitchen. There is a sitting area with a fireplace. The bath was wonderful with a walk-in shower and no shortage of hot water. We loved the heated towel rack. Off the bedroom there is a truly spectacular sunroom that overlooks the gardens. The glass wall is actually a giant slider. So amazing! It is exactly the right spot for the morning coffee or the evening wine. Everything was neat and clean and beautifully appointed. Antique furnishings throughout. We had a hard time with the pillows (a bit too firm) but that's just personal preference. Other than that, our only suggestion might be to add some additional utility to the kitchenware. The villa is centrally located. We highly recommend renting a car. It is affordable and the best way to see all the island has to offer. The roads are very well maintained. As Americans, the driving was intimidating at first because the roads are very narrow in the villages (you never knew when a full sized tractor would come careening around the next turn) but you do get accustomed to it. There is easy side parking just off the street in front of the property. It is a busy road as it is the main route out of the village. The residents don't respect the speed limits so use caution everywhere you drive. Antonio was easy to communicate with and gladly offered suggestions of places to visit or for dining. There was a lovely basket of bread, cheese, and other goodies to welcome us. We had great meals at 4 Plántanas in Santo António, Bar Caloura in Caloura, and O Capitao in Lagoa. Book now, you won't regret it.
