I was not informed that my hotel had closed down prior to arriving at 2200 in a small town with nowhere to stay. Luckily I was able to find local accommodation!
I booked a room over a year in advance as we were going to a wedding close to the inn. It cost £120. On checking in I thought the property looked very run down, and the breakfast had now been downgraded to “continental”, although I had paid for full English. Our room was clean and bed comfortable but shower had mildew iinside and soap was left from previous visitor!
In the morning we went to grubby breakfast room which offered instant coffee, cereal and dubious sliced bread. We left to go out for breakfast. There was no staff In the building and when I needed to contact staff on the emergency number nobody answered the ‘phone.
Disgracefully over priced and looks as though it hasn’t been painted or cleaned for decades. Unusual compared to other Sherborne properties.
Great difficulty in checking in. Owners away and left wrong number on answer-phone. Correct one appeared on paper in window some hours late. Serve yourself breakfast but no milk for cereals, and very limited other items. The room was clean, spacious and well-appointed. The overall condition was of the place was poor.

The hotel - now called "Maddogs" - was very conveniently placed. The room was adequate. However, I was not prepared when Breakfast was an entirely "do-it-yourself "! There were two sliced loves, a choice of serials, orange joice were no staff on the premises,
The staff were very friendly and eager to help. The breakfast was great- made to order! The only part of my stay that was disappointing was that it wasn’t made clear to me that I needed to pre-arrange entry to the property on a Monday because the pub didn’t open until 5pm. Luckily, I had an alternative place to catch a bit of sleep after a red eye flight.
Other than that, was very comfortable and clean.

Great location.
This is a typical old British pub in a great location in historical centre. The rooms have been renovated very comfortably as well.It has a friendly atmosphere.
Overall the stay was good and the surrounding area is absolutely stunning. Would have preferred to have the private bathroom in the room but other than that everything was fine.

Xmas 2018
Xmas break seeing family booked early very disappointed on arrival was told there was no breakfast as the Britannia was closed all over Christmas yet my booking clearly states breakfast included we were the only people staying there we were given £30 refund but was still charged £160 if the management had emailed me and explained the change in circumstances we would have made other arrangements so we where left to our own devices would not recommend going to stay there at Christmas very unprofessional and not the way to run a b/b you are either open or closed unacceptable.
I had never stayed here before so didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. I was greeted straight away in a friendly helpful manner. My room was very comfortable at the front . Slept very well in a comfortable bed. Usual facilities tea coffee etc. WiFi with a good signal strength. I was upgraded to a twin room with en-suite bathroom which was small but big enough. There was no hot water coming from the wash basin tap and the shower head sprayed water from its side. But these are minor points which will I am told will be rectified in the near future as the hotel is being refurbished at this time. The coked full English breakfast was plentiful and well cooked and presented. Overall a very enjoyable stay.

Well located
Warm and friendly welcome - room was adequate but tired and rather hot overnight. Excellent breakfast. Well located. No parking. We were only staying one night and it was fine for that purpose.
No loo roll, had to go searching to find some in another room (no staff around to ask). No heating in bathroom (it was February) , had to find someone to ask for heating in bedroom (which then went off). Bathroom and shower mouldy. Carpets need a good clean. Uncomfortable bed. No bar available due to building work. Didn't bother with breakfast - overall cleanliness didn't bode well for kitchen. Hotel now renamed Mad Dog. Chef there made a note of my concerns at the time and seemed genuinely concerned.

Bathroom needs an overall
This is a very friendly hotel in a good location. Bedroom was comfortable and clean. Heating came on and room became hot and stuffy. Bathroom shower cubicle, tiles and sink surround had a lot of black mould/mildew. Real shame as a little bit of investment and cleaning in the bathroom would change the whole room.
This is an excellent small inn conveniently located in the center of Sherborne. The staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and our room and bathroom very comfortable. We have no hesitation in highly recommending the Britannia Inn.

Good for a short stay but don't expect luxury ....
We found the Britannia welcoming and convenient to the Abbey and the town centre. The staff were both welcoming and very friendly. The beds were clean and comfortable, shower room clean with a good hot shower.( Staff had to be asked twice however for some soap for hand washing ) Noise from the WC and basin waste disposal system was appalling and neither could be used at night.
Tea and coffee supplies were ample - pity about UHT milk cartons but normal I suppose. The room was a bit cramped and clothes hanging rail was both behind the exit door and over the kettle and tea making space! This seemed potentially dangerous to our eyes. Slept well except for rowdy lads playing football outside the inn after the drinking time had finished. The cooked breakfast was good but ' help yourselves to cereals and juice' would have helped us locate what was on offer. Breakfast was plentiful but served in the bar area with a very shabby floor on the first morning and the restaurant on the second.
Parking was possible outside but restricted within certain hours - we parked elsewhere and had to wheel our luggage from some distance away. If we needed to we might stay again but only at favourable rates.
We would not recommend to friends because of the parking and toilet noise at night.
there isn't really any parking; wifi almost non existent; over priced for the state of the room, can't get a VAT invoice or receipt, excellent location for visiting Sherborne, the "private bathroom" is down a corridor, food is generally awesome
The Britannia Inn was lovely and just overall, a great stay in Sherborne, and I loved it, the staff were friendly and very helpful with a lot, made you feel welcomed as if it was your own home, definately I place I would stay again
