Getaway boat weekend!
The stay was just perfect. We came with our own boat and it was easy to navigate to the house. The dock was 30 yards from the front door so easy to get out supplies to the house. (We did make use of the golf cart 😊). Neighbors are so friendly and they let us use their phone to call our family to let them know we arrived. Our cell phones did not work as it is a bit remote. We later found out that there is some coverage on the second floor of the house😁 Nevertheless we did not miss internet and cell phones for the entire weekend! This was one of our more adventuresome weekends to date. Just loved the island, the house, and the people!

Idyllic Escape
We booked this place on a whim and couldn't be happier. At the end of our first day we already regretted not staying longer. First, getting dropped off at the dock in front of the cottage was very convenient. The setting itself is perfect. If you are a science geek, nature-lover, or just want some peace and relaxation, this is your place. We spent hours sitting on the porch watching birds in the marsh, passing boats, and chatting with all the friendly neighbors. Taking the bikes into Ewell to sample Smith Island Cakes was a lot of fun. On our second day we kayaked (kayaks also included!) over to Tylerton for crab cakes. After a full day of paddling, the golf cart was a welcome feature to get into Ewell for an early dinner at the Bayside Inn. The cottage itself was very comfortable, modern, clean, and really just perfect. Also, do yourself a favor and order food from Ms. Landon......best crabcakes you'll ever have. We will absolutely come back!

Exactly the getaway we needed!
We were looking for some relaxation and adventure and we found both on Smith Island! We spent five beautiful days at the cottage, which was perfect for our family and very clean and comfortable. The views were spectacular and we spent hours on the front porch each day watching the birds and being mesmerized by the water. We took daily bike rides into the town to explore, enjoyed lunch at the Bayside Inn and Harborside Market, and visited the Smith Island bakery just about daily to try a new flavor of the Smith Island cake… We couldn’t find a flavor we didn’t like. We spent time every day crabbing and fishing from the dock and caught lots of crabs. Our luck with the fishing wasn’t as good. The people in the town are warm and welcoming and just delightful to talk with and get to know. The crabcakes are a must in Smith Island, and the crab cakes at Drum Point Market in Tylerton were our favorite. If You are looking for a quiet, peaceful and beautiful place to unplug and enjoy time with family and friends, we highly recommend Blue Heron Cottage and Smith Island. It is a vacation we will remember always.

What a truly unique place Smith Island is. We really needed to unplug from everything and this was a great way to do so. The views and the bay literally just across the inlet are stunning and a blast to explore on the kayaks.

Smith Island’s Finest
My husband, daughter (2.5 y/o) and I recently traveled to The Blue Heron on Smith Island. This was our first time ever hearing about this location, let alone visiting, and we surely had an experience we will not forget. The sunset our first night was breathtaking, and could be easily watched from the comfort of the front porch. The house is well-maintained, well-equipped(sheets, towels, cookware, condiments) and has excellent A/C. The house also comes with kayaks and bikes, which we used both days. If able, I do recommend bringing your own bikes, as the ones provided are pretty rusted and some need maintenance. The kayaks, however, are in wonderful condition and allow exploration of the miles of trails surrounding the island. I would also recommend bug spray and long sleeves/pants, as the gnats “bite” and can be quite distracting. The island has a rich history which we thoroughly enjoyed learning about. Everyone is town is very welcoming and the crab cakes and Smith Island cake should not be missed! If traveling with a child, I would definitely recommend bringing games, books, toys etc.; There are a few items provided at the house, but I wish I would have brought more. Also, make sure to bring mostly all food and drink, as there is only a small market with limited hours that is walkable/bikeable, while the larger market is in Tylerton and can only be accessed by kayak/boat. In summary, this was a lovely house and perfect for a quiet getaway. If you are looking to unplug, kayak and birdwatch, this is the house to book! If you are looking for a lot of activity or want to lay on the beach, you will not find that at Smith Island.

An experience
What an experience!!! The house is comfortable. The place is right on the bay so sunsets and tide watching was perfect. Be aware you will be leaving comforts of convenience stores and transportation. I am not much of a traveler, my world view is just what surrounds me. I was a little uneasy that I didn't see many people, but those I did meet were very warm and hospitable. The history of Smith island is lovely. It truly is a community. I think the place is ideal for solitude and resetting. I am glad to have visited, thank you for opening your home as a rental . I got to see a different part of America, a watermen island. Truly a good memory.

Quiet and Isolated
Overall, we had a lovely getaway vacation. We wanted downtime, and that's what we got. The cottage is beautiful, clean, and conveniently stocked. The location is beautiful and isolated. If you want isolation, 5 stars. If you want convenience--you may need to plan ahead. We didn't find a golf cart, and so the town was prohibitively far for me to reach with my toddler. That was fine. We planned for that. But I would caution that people be aware this is the situation. Also, the water had a strong taste, and my kids wouldn't drink it. I wish I would have known, so I could have packed water or a water filter pitcher. A kind person from the town dropped some off to us, so we were fine, but I would have preferred to plan ahead for that. Finally, we packed all our own food in. But there was a folder in the cottage where you could order crab or other food. However, the landline in the house didn't work, and my cell phone (AT&T) only had coverage about 50% of the time. So again, be prepared for the isolation. Our favorite parts were sitting on the dock watching fish, trying to catch crabs, and hanging out on the porch playing games. A really fun vacation that we'll always remember.

A Place to Get-Away From It All
Beginning in Crisfield, when Larry the captain of the Jason II told us it was fine to leave our cars for a week parked in a spot that had a sign that said, "No Overnight Parking", and continuing on to our arrival onto Smith Island where there were no license plates on the rear or front of the cars driven by locals, we knew we were in a world where we can leave any worries behind and refresh ourselves with spectacular lightning storms, tranquil sunrises/sunsets, and the calls of seabirds. We supplemented the bikes provided by the house with 2 of our own to ride the 1 mile to Ewell. As Kristy suggested, we brought the bulk of our food over on the ferry. Food Lion does deliver over the ferry if needed. Leslie lives next door and brought over our order of the famous Smith Island Layer cake. Cindy down the street gave us bait for our crab trap and soft-shelled crabs for dinner. Sheila and her husband made us a steamed crab dinner. Eddie Corbin took us to the pelican rookery and showed us the house he grew up in and where his parents and great-grandparents lived in. Johnny Tyler showed us how he processed soft-shelled crabs in his crab shanty. The Smith Islanders are very nice. We took the two kayaks that come with the house to explore the guts, jetties, and troll fishing lures. Drift with the current and in the stillness you will discover more. The house is clean, well-maintained, and is very comfortable. Thank you Kristy for a wonderful week on Smith Island.

Rejuvenating retreat !
We had a wonderful weekend at The Blue Heron. Everything went as planned, from catching the ferry with Captain Larry to asking one of the lovely neighbors to cook a delicious home made dinner (soft shelled crabs, crab cakes and fried chicken....all of which were outstanding!) for us. We fished from the dock and caught a few fish (not too many but we did try!) and saw terrapins, lots of crabs and lovely birdlife, pelicans, herons, egrets, ducks, and more. We walked into town (and caught a lift on the way back since it was well up in the 90's) and enjoyed that too. Lunch at the Bayside was fun. My absolute favorite part was using the kayak at low tide and paddling all the way across the little inlet, it was calm, quiet, peaceful....just me and the sea breezes. My husband loved learning more about the crabbing techniques, the difference between the types of crabs and of course fishing! We'd love to come back!

We had a great time, the house is beautiful and has everything you need. The view is awesome, especially the sunsets. We went crabbing and fishing off the dock. Caught and cooked crabs. Rode the bikes to the Bayside Inn. Purchased the Smith Island famous cake and one of the waitresses "Michelle" delivered it to the house for us. The locals are so friendly. Just an overall great vacation. Thanks!!

It was clean and well maintained. Description is accurate to what we got and experienced.
Our family needed a place to unplug. That is what we did and Smith Island is the place to do it. It is a slow paced, small town community. We brought our own board games and reading. We went into town and had lunch at the Inn one Day and got groceries. We went by bike. There are neighbors glad to take you. It is a two mile trek however you go. This is not a tourist destination. It had sporadic cell service and no WiFi. Pack your groceries as the market is small and only takes cash. Most vendors, those who will take you fishing or boating, only operate in cash. We kayaked and hung out on the dock watching sunsets. One of our neighbors cooked us a nice meal as we arrived later our first night. She even showed us their crab shanty and how to “pick” crabs. Sweet people. Very helpful to us and each other. This was a much needed chill time for our family.

Beautiful view! Nice home! Wonderful people!
In September 2017, I made plans to bring a few of my Girl Scouts to Smith Island to learn about the Bay. To my surprise, at the beginning of June 2018, the reservation that we made at another SI property was cancelled due to double booking. With six (6) little girls looking forward to our trip, I was in a bit of a panic when I was lucky enough to come across this home. Kristy responded to my request right away and we were back in business! Earlier this week, we had the pleasure of staying in the Blue Heron and everything was wonderful. Larry (Captain Jason II) dropped us off right at the dock in front of the home. We had brought supplies, but found ourselves in need of a few items, mainly "C" batteries. The trip into town is about 2 miles. The golf cart was out of commission with a flat tire, which was disappointing since our little travelers really couldn't handle the walk in the heat, especially since they had been up since about 5/5:30am. But have no fear, that is when we met Ms. Cindy. She lived a few homes down and was kind enough to not only give us a ride to town, but sent us a pound of crab meat the next day. We were able to make wonderful crab cakes with the fresh picked meat. I know that the description on this site doesn't give you a ton of information and Kristy doesn't supply a ton of information before hand, but the house is well stocked with information about the island and activities. We used the business cards that Kristy left in the home and booked two (2) boat trips. The first was an artifact finding trip with Tim Marshall. He was able to tell us a lot about the history of the island. We made some great finds including 2 arrow heads, what appears to be a fossil and a bottle from the 1800s. The next day, we took a trip with Barry Bruce. He showed us crab scrappers (used by soft-crabbers), a sluffing house and the pelican nesting sites. We even saw a skate (fish)! Finally, with the help of the neighbor, we purchased a Smith Island cake from Jennifer Dize, which was amazingly delish and did not disappoint! While we were disappointed about the golf cart, it certainly didn't keep us from having an absolutely amazing trip. Even the flies (which are nasty buggers) didn't get us down....just don't forget your "Off" and/or long pants! Thank you to Kristy for helping us out in such a pinch and for sharing your lovely home with us. The girls will remember this experience for a life time.

Great and relaxing trip, sunset is amazing!!
I am so glad that I finally got to take my mom to Smith Island! It was a great trip! There were some communication issues with the host and I didn't get any details until the day before my trip. But everything worked out in the end. We took the capt Jason 2 over (per the directions). Larry, the captain, asked if we wanted to eat lunch in Tylerton before he dropped us off at the house. We had crab cake sandwiches at Drum Point market and they were very good. It was nice to see that town as well. Larry then dropped us off right at the dock by the house which was very convenient. I'm glad we ate at Tylerton because no one would have wanted to walk to Ewell for food. We did bring our own food, but we would have wanted a meal if not for the crab cake. We just kind of hung around the house, enjoying the amazing view from the front porch! The next day we ventured into Ewell. The golf cart wasn't working so we walked. It was a beautiful day and pretty breezy so walking wasn't that bad. We ate at Bayside, our neighbor was our waitress. It was very good. We got cake of course, they had 4 flavors and there were 4 of us so we each got one and tasted them all. The classing chocolate was my favorite! You can't go wrong with yellow cake and chocolate frosting! We walked around Ewell a bit and them ventured back to the house. We had ordered dinner from a local Sharon and were excited for that to show up (her number was in the house). We were not disappointed at all!! It was by far the best crab cake I have ever had! It was definitely fresh meat and amazing! The meal was crab cakes, green beans, scalloped potatoes and a roll. Everything was handmade by Sharon and really showcased true Smith Island cooking!! The trip was pretty amazing and what I had expected for Smith Island. The house is so nice and definitely the best rental on the island! We didn't get a chance to use the kayaks but would have liked to. It's nice that they are included in your rental, as are bikes.

AWESOME!
A beautiful and cozy homr to experience Smith Island! Captain Larry dropped us off right on the dock, where we spent the rest of the day crabbing. We also called a friendly local watermen for crabs and they were delivered right to our doorstep via golf cart! We had a great time taking the bikes down to Ewell and visiting the Museum and seeing the beautiful scenery. The neighbors next door are extremely warm and friendly, and we spent both nights relaxing on the front porch. Also great - lots of supplies in the kitchen and fridge like salt, pepper, vinegar, ketchup, plus extra toilet paper in the closets, etc. A WONDERFUL STAY!

Heaven at the end of the Earth
If you are looking to really get away and unplug from the rat race of life then this is your place. Quiet and beautiful with views of the Chesapeake you will never find anywhere else. This had to be the most relaxing time we have had away from home in the past twenty-four years of married life my wife and I have spent together. The folks of Smith Island could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Beautiful bike ride up to the next town of Ewell for a very delightful meal made out last day very special. We got to see a little of everything including a waterspout out on the bay. That was scary for a few moments but it soon dissipated and moved on into Virginia later that day. One of the highlights of our trip was buying a Smith Island cake to take home from Mrs. Mary Ada in Tylerton. She is the sweetest person to talk to and was very accommodating to us after calling at the last minute. Met us at the dock the morning we left and hand delivered one of the most delicious cakes ever put in one's mouth. Don't buy one anywhere else...she has crab cakes to die for as well. Everyone was so nice and helpful we cannot wait to return again soon for another restful vacation. One thing you will want to do is take the time to make some plans for this trip and bring any special food you want. If not be sure to buy at the Drum Point Market when you stop in Tylerton on the way there. If not it is a 2+ mile bike ride to Ewell to get to a market or restaraunt. Not a problem unless you do not like to ride a bike or the weather is bad. If you get lucky and are friendly you could hitch a ride with a local. The accommodations here are spectacular. Blue Heron has everything you will need and is absolutely beautiful. Please don't miss this trip you will regret it.

Peaceful place to recharge.
The Blue Heron Cottage is beautiful and stocked with all the amenities. The views from the front porch, dock, and kayacks were simply amazing. We stayed six nights and loved every minute. It was so peaceful and serene. The local waterman and neighbors we met were some of the kindest people you will ever meet. Make sure you you contact Sharon to order the traditional Smith Island Crab Cake meal. Probably the best crab cakes I have ever eaten. If you plan accordingly, you can really enjoy your stay. We cannot say enough about the Blue Heron!! We left so relaxed and ready for the rat race. Thank you for a great vacation.
