My husband, daughter (2.5 y/o) and I recently traveled to The Blue Heron on Smith Island. This was our first time ever hearing about this location, let alone visiting, and we surely had an experience we will not forget. The sunset our first night was breathtaking, and could be easily watched from the comfort of the front porch. The house is well-maintained, well-equipped(sheets, towels, cookware, condiments) and has excellent A/C. The house also comes with kayaks and bikes, which we used both days. If able, I do recommend bringing your own bikes, as the ones provided are pretty rusted and some need maintenance. The kayaks, however, are in wonderful condition and allow exploration of the miles of trails surrounding the island. I would also recommend bug spray and long sleeves/pants, as the gnats ābiteā and can be quite distracting. The island has a rich history which we thoroughly enjoyed learning about. Everyone is town is very welcoming and the crab cakes and Smith Island cake should not be missed! If traveling with a child, I would definitely recommend bringing games, books, toys etc.; There are a few items provided at the house, but I wish I would have brought more. Also, make sure to bring mostly all food and drink, as there is only a small market with limited hours that is walkable/bikeable, while the larger market is in Tylerton and can only be accessed by kayak/boat. In summary, this was a lovely house and perfect for a quiet getaway. If you are looking to unplug, kayak and birdwatch, this is the house to book! If you are looking for a lot of activity or want to lay on the beach, you will not find that at Smith Island.
