Shenandoah Hideaway

We welcome your romantic getaway, small family retreat or couples adventure to enjoy the solitude, phenomenal sunsets and wildlife of this clean, comfortable and stocked mountain home. The property is bordered by national park land on two sides and is 1.5 miles from foot access into the park. The charming town of Luray, and its caverns as well as its restaurants and conveniences, is 15 minutes away. Car access to a SNP entrance is available to the north & south, 30-40 minutes in each direction.
The road that leads for about 2 miles to the house is very steep at sections. This can make for a dangerous situation if a car has not been properly maintained in brakes or other areas or during winter weather. It is a state-maintained road so it is paved and has a center line, but winter weather can make it impassable until the storm passes and road crews address it. Please be aware of this risk when booking for the winter months.
The main entrance to the house is from the driveway. You enter at the level with both bedrooms, the common area with pull-out couch and a half bath. There is also a raised balcony with four Adirondack chairs. Down the stairs there is an open room that includes a beautiful gas fireplace along with the kitchen, eating and lounging areas . There is also a full bathroom and utility room with laundry facilities and storage on the lower floor. **Caution: these hardwood steps are more steep than normal, although they have a normal tread width and railing.
You can exit the building downstairs onto a covered porch with seating for four. Turning away from the road, there are two patios nestled within a landscaped rock garden with a fire pit, charcoal grill, hammock and dining table for eight. There is further eating and relaxing space, as well as simple exercise equipment, under the carport at the front of the house. The entire property within its boundaries is available to guests with the exception of the owner's closet in the back bedroom and the shed.
We will always try to stock the home with essentials and keep updated snapshots of refrigerated staples to help you plan your trip. We are available to communicate by messaging between the hours of 8 am and 9 pm. There are plans in the home if emergencies arise during off hours. We will strive to respond to your message within two hours or less.
Our property is bordered on two sides by national park land, on one side by a wooded tract screening a neighbor about 100 yards away, and on the last side by a road that dead ends 1.5 miles uphill. The house is near the road and you will see/hear a car every 10-90 minutes every day, but only if you are upstairs with the windows open or in the carport or front yard. There are spurts of car traffic as the first and last park employees pass each day, perhaps 3 or 4 cars together at 8 am and 10 pm respectively, but otherwise the road is pretty quiet. We have one neighbor through the wood line that has a small dog that you can hear with the windows open in the distance at night. There can also be birds, coyotes and cows at night if you sleep with the windows open. Generally speaking, the property is very quiet, has excellent night sky viewing and pretty solid privacy as long as you aren't in the front yard.
There is parking for up to three cars next to the road. There is one carport space. We are interested in going on and creating travel experiences that minimize unnecessary waste. Therefore, we offer many local and sustainable products and processes throughout the property. We also have lots of staple foods in the refrigerator and pantry, but only things that are generally easy to share with strangers, mostly. Its up to you if you use what we have on hand for when we visit, but we ask you treat what's there with respect. We also have firewood, starting supplies and equipment. If you are comfortable composting your food scraps, we have provided instructions.
We also hope to offer plastic, glass, metal, paper and cardboard recycling; we are working on making that feasible. Our soaps are all bought in bulk with little to no plastic packaging or synthetic chemicals in their composition. Also, while we have lots of wildlife outside, we do have, at times, stinkbugs and other insects that get into the house. We do our best to deal with them, but they are bountiful and persistent.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful, well-equipped home with picturesque Mountain views and unbelievable night sky. The absolute ideal spot to relax, recharge, and unwind. It is a short drive for lunch at The Black Twig in Sperryville, dinner at Paddy O’s in Washington, or to access the Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns. We really enjoyed the scenic Skyline Drive as well. The owner was an absolute delight to work with. They have a spectacular patio with a stockpile of wood for you to enjoy an evening by the fire pit. 10/10 would absolutely return to this little slice of heaven.
