Clean, well-appointed, comfortable, quiet. Right in the center of Stromness, 5 minute walk from the ferry. Ours was a twin, two flights up. Only knock is no lift.

Beautiful old hotel with fantastic friendly staff and one of the best full breakfasts we’ve had in the UK. It can be noisy with the pub downstairs (we were on the 1st floor) and the proximity to the other buildings. Dinner at the Ferry Inn which is the sister hotel was incredible. Make sure to have the scallops.

Perfect stay.
Great stay…..wonderful large updated room and bathroom. Large windows…..lots of light and great shades for night. Check in was simple. Bar on site. Great breakfast included…..so many good choices for a hit breakfast. Parking was the only concern for us…..but turned out to be easy. We parked at the ferry terminal….had to move our luggage but only 2 minutes away. Yes the terminal charges but when we parked at 4PM one day could pay till noon the next day. Supper was offered at their companion inn….The Ferry Inn….2 minute walk. Make reservations. Was a great place to eat with great good with great service.

This is a friendly place with clean pleasant rooms and a nice breakfast. However, it isn’t really a hotel, more a pub offering bed and breakfast. When I booked it advertised a restaurant, but this had closed down by the time we arrived, and we had to book dinner in a sister hotel nearby. Not a big issue, but as there are only two restaurants in town you have to book early. We found here that like many places in Orkney there seems to be a serious staff shortage. The same lovely lady who served breakfast also ran the bar all day and tried to cover reception duty. She was fantastic (older lady with long hair) but struggled to cover everything. However, we would stay again, and it seemed much nicer than the other hotel in town.

This is one of the few places to stay in the ferry port of Stromness, Mainland Orkney. The staff (and pretty much everyone on the island) are extremely friendly and helpful. The hotel is well-located close to the ferry to mainland Scotland. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The included breakfast is marvelous! The main drawbacks are that the building is old, so there is no parking and no elevator. The hotel is staffed only by the breakfast servers and then the bartender, so checking in is slightly confusing. The sister hotel, The Ferry Inn, responds promptly to any concerns however and is very helpful. I would definitely stay here again!

We only really saw staff at the hotel when we checked in and out. Otherwise it seemed relatively unattended. Noise from the pub carried upstairs into our room. The hotel has no lift, which I understand, but I sorted my search by places with lifts and it still came up. My friend has problems with stairs, so it was kind of inconvenient. Overall am OK stay, but next time I would stay in Kirkwall.

Great location on main street in heart of Stromness, very convenient for the bus to Kirkwall and hiring bike. The staff were very helpful and breakfast service was excellent. Unfortunately there was a problem with the lighting in the bathroom, which without a window for natural light was very dim.

There’s a back bar that’s bright and comfortable (ask the bartender how to get through). The rooms were small but comfortable. The people were so friendly in this little town. Great food but everything closes early. Far fewer tourists here. It’s a great stop!

Very welcoming check-in with Scott, who was also a lot of fun at the bar! Room was spacious and had everything we needed to enjoy exploring Orkney. Breakfast was so much food and wonderful service both mornings. We had dinner at the sister inn Ferry Inn and enjoyed owner Gareth's service numerous times as he seems to be everywhere! All around cheerful hospitality and a lot of laughs in our stay, making Royal Hotel a fun part of our Orkney experience!

Pleasurable Stay
Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were excellent. Our room was Ok but the shower in the bathroom was poor and let the room down. We had an enjoyable stay in Orkney. There is only limited parking outside the hotel so used nearby longstay parking. It is a pity that the hotel does not provide food in the evenings but the food at the sister hotel "The Ferry Inn " was good to excellent. We would stay again.

Charming little hotel in Stromness. The staff were wonderful and very accommodating. The breakfast each morning was a huge plus before we set off to explore. Unfortunately for our family we booked during Shopping Week and were expecting a quiet stay, but instead got loud, rowdy nights as the only pub in town is at the hotel. If you are travelling in July make note of Shopping Week dates unless you are there for the party. 😊 Also, not many eating spots are open later at night so plan accordingly!!
