Accommodation In Tenterfield
Tenterfield is best known for being the birthplace of the nation. A true-blue Australian town with a rich history, it’s surrounded by national parks. Tourists flock to the attractive countryside for a welcome escape from the city, so why don’t you visit and see for yourself? Find a great Tenterfield hotel and discover the perfect destination for your next holiday.
It was in Tenterfield that Sir Henry Parks made his first Federation Speech, galvanizing public opinion (back in 1889) which ultimately led to the federation of all Australian states. Check out the exhibition honouring this important statesman at the Railway Station Museum. You can learn about other famous residents in Centenary Cottage, including Sir Stuart Donaldson - the owner of Tenterfield Station, he who became the first premier of NSW in 1856. Nearby, visit St Stephens Presbyterian Church where Banjo Patterson married Alice Walker, and continue your stroll through historic Tenterfield to get amazing photos of more than 100 heritage listed buildings - all from the mid-19th century.
Tenterfield rests on the Granite Belt, a wonderful wine region in Northern NSW. Stop in at Kurrajong Downs and Deetswood Winery to sample their delights, or continue just a little bit further to Reedy Creek Winery and try some of the nation's best wine. In aAutumn the drive is especially good, as the wonderful colours of the fallen leaves add to the scenery.
The region boasts 6 national parks, with Bald Rock National Park a definite must-see. Here you can climb the largest exposed granite rock in the southern hemisphere, while standing 260m above the surrounding bushland. Bring a picnic lunch and wander through the massive boulders strewn among the countryside. Boonoo Boonoo Falls is a tremendous waterfall, so don’t leave without grabbing a couple of great photos of the river dropping over 210 metres to the pools below.
Love birds? Visit Basket Swamp National Park, which is an important local wetland feeding many of the creeks in the Clarence River Valley System. Hundreds of different bird species call the area home, with a huge range of walking tracks to suit even the most avid bushwalker. Reach the Timbarra Lookout and you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the countryside.
In February the Tenterfield Show is a lively event, as the town celebrates with a rodeo, live bands and plenty of stalls to purchase local products. Admire the work of local artists and marvel at beautiful needlework and knitted pieces that have taken many hours to create.
Resting only 275 km south of Brisbane, Tenterfield sits at the junction of the New England and Bruxner Highways - and is easy to visit for a weekend away. Enjoy stunning tree lined roads and the heritage of one of Australia’s "most Australian" towns, while you stay in great accommodation in Tenterfield. What So wot are you waiting for?
