1890's Log Cabin ~ 230 Acre Private Reserve ~ 150’ Waterfall ~ Hiking Trails

Imagine having your own private sanctuary in the heart of the Gunks.
This home resides on a 230 acre Private Reserve land open to members and their guests, right next door to Minnewaska State Park. Unparalleled proximity to 30,000 acres of forest, sky lakes and trails to explore. Minutes from New Paltz, Minnewaska, Mohonk and Trapps. Incredible views and surrounding nature abounds. It is a hikers and nature lovers paradise.

Built in the 1890's as a hunting retreat, this log house is a private residence that has rich history within its American Chestnut walls, a wood now extinct. Decorated and added onto by the current family from the 1960's on, the house is a museum of curated artifacts and a feast for the eyes. There are several levels of decks facing either the valley, 2 freshwater reflection pools, or a 150' waterfall. The sound of running water abounds.

First floor: 1 queen bedroom with en-suite bathroom is off the dining room on the first floor. This bedroom was occupied by Ralph Lauren in the 1980's when he would stay here. 2 additional bedrooms with queen beds and 1 small bunk room with 2 single beds all share the main bathroom with a shower. Dining room with vaulted ceilings seats 8 and the Living room has another dining option for 8-10. Living Room has an 1890's fire place with reading nooks and a Grand Piano. There is a chess nook and a quiver of classic board games. The Falls Room is a multi-purpose room with space for yoga, group meetings or playroom. There is a projector a large viewing screen for presentations or movie nights. The galley kitchen is fully stocked with cooking basics and boasts Julia Child's very own stove!

Second Floor: This level is a suite unto itself with an open concept. Queen bed, living room, fireplace and two queen size reading nooks that could also sleep an additional 2 people each. A nursery room connects to the bathroom with tub and shower.

This house is NOT for everyone. It is rustic and a unique experience. The fresh water reflection pool may have tadpoles or frogs due to the fact that there are no chemicals. The surroundings around the house we call 'expert' terrain. It is uneven and requires attention. We have just added Mini Split AC/Heat units in both the falls room and the living room. There are fans in all of the bedrooms.

This home resides on Private Reserve land open to members and their guests. The 1 mile driveway requiring 4 wheel drive in winter months (or we can arrange for transport from base of mountain to the top where the home is). There are several private cabins and Geo Domes on the Reserve that can be rented separately.

This house comes with a host who lives nearby. The host can grocery shop for you prior to arrival, book massages, yoga, guide hikes and arrange for a private chef to prepare dinners for an additional cost. Inquire for more info. Let us know how can we make hour stay more incredible?

Wineries and distilleries also abundant in the area: Hudson Whiskey, Angry Orchard, Whitecliff Vineyards and the Hudson Valley Wine Trail, amongst others.

Hike to Awosting Lake 1.5 hrs.
Hike to Gertrude's Nose 1 hr.
Hike to private Atwater Falls 25 min.
Tillson Lake 2 min away: for fishing and kayaking. (Equipment not supplied and permit required for fishing)

Unique, unnecessarily expensive, and wildly disappointing
Despite the wonderful history and unique decor of the property, the overall experience, highlighted by poor interactions with the owner/caretakers, made me wish we booked elsewhere. There was next to no communication with the owner after booking and as a result we ended up paying for an extra dome and extra pet and were unaware of the snakes in the pool, complete lack of privacy and total ban of outdoor fires. Most of these items weren’t communicated until arrival and in hindsight we definitely would have booked somewhere else if we had more notice. The lack of privacy was certainly the biggest issue that was misrepresented in the listing as a caretaker checks in and does laundry unannounced in addition to keeping an eye on things, every day. They should also disclose that the pools have plenty of snakes in them in addition to the frogs that they kind of mention. Bottomline, this rental experience offers incredibly poor value for what you get. Hopefully they can make the necessary changes to improve the guest experience moving forward.

Perfect summer getaway
We had a group of adult friends at Awosting for the weekend, and it was everything we had hoped for and more! Kristen was an incredible hostess, and we enjoyed all aspects of the lodge- especially the freshwater pool, waterfall hike, and fire pit. It was clean and comfortable and absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a semi-rustic location with a big group!

Holiday by the fire!
First off, the caretaker for the property, Kristin, was amazing and took such great care of us during our stay including taking us on a guided hike to yet another beautiful waterfall on the property -- in addition to the one right off the back deck! The house is definitely rustic and not for everyone, but the surroundings are extraordinary and made for a really nice getaway for a few days. The highlight of the entire stay hands down was the amazing unending fire in the great room that Kristin started up in the morning and kept going for us all day long. She even built a bonfire outside one evening, which was a real treat along with the sound of the waterfall.

New Years Getaway
I can't say enough about the Awosting Lodge and surrounding property- it is truly magical!! The lodge was quaint, cozy and filled with quirky antiques and artifacts. There was plenty of space to comfortably spread out our families and hang out by the fire (4 adults and 6 kids). The property was absolutely breathtaking- waterfalls in view from the back deck and hiking trails easily accessible from the lodge. We didn't leave once! This was truly an amazing place to stay. The host, Kristen, was so lovely and extremely helpful- having her there made the stay that much better, especially as a helping hand with the kids! She had a lot of information about the grounds, grabbed us some groceries, helped arrange a private chef- truly a gem. We can't wait to come back and see what it is like in the summertime! Thank you for a peaceful, relaxing getaway!

Weekend in the Gunks!
This place is absolutely magical! Brunch by the waterfall, sleeping on the porch, freshwater pools, big open sky....a perfect place to escape the monotony of daily life. Scott was awesome, part chef, part tour guide and part historian. I understand why JB and CK spent so much time here. Where else can you live in a hunting lodge with a Gatsby past? Perfect for our group!

Perfection, paradise, call it what ever you like, this was amazing.
Let me be direct and to the point, even if general. Camilla the owner and Scott the groundskeeper/chef were excellent. Accomodating and on top of everything, we were left not wanting or wishing for anything. The house and property is even more gorgeous then the pictures indicate. There are simply not enough positive things or words to describe our expirience in all aspects of our trip, from people to places and things. The entire trip, me and my friends kept trying to figure out when we can come back and we are still trying to figure that out. Thank you Scott and Camilla for everything!

An amazing hidden gem with endless character
This was a beautiful property surrounded by forest and waterfalls. The house is an old log cabin and has endless details and items that could only be found there, relating to its history and past. They also have an amazing library of books that we read every day. The history of the property can be narrated to you by THE BEST host/chef in the world Scott. Scott will not only tell you about the house's story, but he will also cook for you, whatever you want, and his cooking is awesome...especially his cookies! We highly recommend this place. Its a true gem and one of the most unique and relaxing experiences we have had. We hope to be back in the summer with our 2 girls!

Hikes... Bonfires... Culinary Delights, Oh My!
Our weekend at the Lodge was a treat for all senses. Natural beauty abounds. We enjoyed exploring waterfalls and trails throughout the property. We lounged on the sun-splashed deck, share smores and stories by the outdoor bonfires under the stars, and cozied up by the many stone fireplaces after fabulous adventures on the trails. Any culinary delight – from the gluten free to the glutenous - was available, thanks to live-in cook and caretaker Scott, and delicious to boot! All the while, you’re soaking up the quirky and storied history of the unique place. Upon arriving, you wonder “if only the walls could talk...” And… they do! Scott prepared not only the delicious treats and details to ensure a fabulous stay, but also brought the eccentric history of the place to life with fascinating tales! Such intrigue, such adventure, such fun! Of lore and lure, the Awosting historic lodge does not disappoint! Awosting is an idyllic mountain setting, a unique place to disconnect and turn on your inner-adventuring spirit all while being pampered like a “king/queen of the mountain”, even if only for our brief time in residence!

What a magical place!
We had such a wonderful stay. The word “rustic” is appropriate, but in the most enchanting way. The house, with its history and furnishings and uniqueness, from the large fireplace in the living room to the Olympic size natural swimming pool to the gorge with the waterfall, is hard to do it justice with words. The natural beauty and hiking was spectacular. One of the best parts of our stay was Scott, with his charming way with our children, his fabulous meals and his entertaining stories. He says the waterfall always brings fresh energy, but he does as well. Our children cried when we left, and we assured them that we hope to come back someday too!

This is a truly magical spot and experience. Not only is the home filled with wonderful history and family memories, the position of the home deep in the woods next to an enormous waterfall is INCREDIBLE. I've never VRBO'd a home that came with a caretaker and chef - it felt so great not to have to cook! An absolutely memorable experience. Thank you, Camilla and Scott!

Amazing property, Area
The host is very clear: this property is not for everyone. She's right! The pros: The waterfall outside is spectacular. The house has history and the hikes on the land were wonderful. Scott, the live-in cook, is hilarious. He's a skilled cook and made us laugh (and his fish tacos are to die for). The house has much charm and history. This is more like camping than staying in a luxury resort. While we had modern appliances and fresh linens, etc. there's also no ac, tadpoles in the pool, and historic features to the house. We found it charming. I recommend this unique place. It was fun and we have stories from our trip that will last a lifetime!

Very special place
For those who are fans of places with breathtakingly beautiful natural surroundings, that are located remotely enough not to hear or see anything other than mountains, forests and waterfalls for miles but within a short drive to all necessary amenities that are part of modern life and do not mind the simplicity and rustic character that comes with truly being immersed in nature, it can't get better than this. A bonus is Scott, the house caretaker and chef extraordinaire who spoils the guest with his culinary creations and is there to address all the guest's needs. He is happy to share his knowledge about the rich history of this place which we all found captivating. Everyone in our group of two families including our young adult children were mesmerized by this truly unique place. Highly recommended.

A magical adventure awaits…
It was a true privilege to be the first renter of this slice of heaven. To celebrate the birthday of a family matriarch, we needed a great getaway to reunite as small families. The location was the most convenient to convene but little did we imagine that we would chance into this spectacular experience at Awosting Lodge (Awosting means “Pure Water” in Algonquin Indian). Three things stand out about this lodge. 1) The natural splendor was unparalleled. Set in acres of woodland, glacial lakes, waterfalls and exploratory trails there was a spectacular view at every corner. 2) The cottage inside had a tasteful designer touch infused with historic artifacts that gave every room a superior sense of purpose and yet the outside patio/balcony was by far one of the setting that we´ve every experienced. The all-natural Olympic size pool fed by mountain streams was ever-inviting for a fresh dip and crisp rejuvenation. There was also a tastefully appointed dome tent and an outdoor bed that the kids loved!! ´3) Scott the Chef was a very warm and welcoming host who besides organizing amazing dinners, paid special attention to anticipating needs and connecting with the young and old alike sharing some great stories and plenty of laughs. It was special! We might have uncovered a new annual tradition for our family.. my sincere thanks to Camila & Scott for making our stay magical!
