Western Australia is like a sandwich—if that sandwich were an entire third of a continent and made up of fertile green bread (ew!) and a dry, red-meat centre (salted beef, anyone?). Okay, maybe that comparison isn’t as appetising as all the flavours Perth and the Margaret River wine region have flowing through them, but it kinda works, at least visually. Ever wonder what the earliest life-forms were like? Wonder no more instead, visit the thrombolites and stromatolites at Lake Clifton and Shark Bay. These rock-like formations were built by tiny organisms who became the ancestors of all life on the planet. Hard-working little buggers, huh? Of course, you could go spelunking and diving on Rottnest Island to check out some other rock formations.
