Why go fishing in Fiordland? The better question, really, is why not? It's hard to think of good reasons to turn down spending a day (or several) amid scenery impressive even by New Zealand's high standards. Here, in the southern part of the island, it's the rivers and lakes where the marine life is bounteous. If you've been researching where to fish in the South Island, you'll know by now that competition for the title of best fishing area is steep in this fish-filled part of the country. Where to fish

  • Want more bang for your buck? (Or fish for your buck, we guess.) You've got to fish the Waiau River. Per kilometre of water, this mega-rich river has about as many fish as you can find anywhere in the country.
  • If it's river fish you're after, head to Hollyford Valley, Milford Road or Milford Track.
  • Lake Te Anau is one of Fiordland's most beautiful features (and a bit of a superstar when it comes to fish, too).

Types of fish

  • Trout fishing in Fiordland is a big deal. Fat brown trout and rainbow trout are the main draws here.
  • Blue cod hang out in the depths of the incredible fiords.
  • Not in a trout or cod mood? Head to Lake Manapouri for a bit of salmon fishing.
