What you can expect
The safari starts from Daressalaam or Zanzibar, departing very early in the morning, taking 5-6 hours by jeep to arrive at the park. The activities will include game drive in the park to see the wildlife.
Mikumi National Park borders Selous Game Reserve on the south, the two areas form a unique ecosystem. It is the fourth largest national park in Tanzania and is reachable from Daressalaam & Zanzibar. The landscape of Mikumi is often compared to that of the Serengeti with its large plains but it is much more humid due to its river deltas and is therefore much greener throughout the year. The road that crosses the park divides it into two areas with partially distinct environments. The area north-west is characterised by the alluvial plain of the river basin Mkata. The vegetation of this area consists of savannah, dotted with acacia, baobab, tamarinds, and some rare palm. In this area, furthest from the road, there are spectacular rock formations of the Uluguru Mountains.
The fauna includes many species characteristic of the African savannah. The park contains a subspecies of giraffe that biologists consider the link between the Maasai giraffe and the reticulated giraffe. In addition, Mikumi is the only place where you can find the dwarf elephants that have adapted to dense rain forest with smaller bodies and shorter ivory. Other animals in the park are elephants, zebras, impala, eland, kudu, black antelope, baboons, wildebeests and buffaloes. About 5 km north of the park, there are two pools inhabited by hundreds of hippos. More than 400 different species of birds also inhabit the park. Most visitors come to Mikumi National Park aiming to spot the ‘Big Five’ (cheetah, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), and they are never disappointed. The hippo pools provide close access to the mud-loving wildlife, and bird-watching along the waterways is particularly rewarding. Mikumi National Park borders the Selous Game Reserve and Udzungwa Mountains National Park, and the three locations make a varied and pleasant safari circuit.
