The first tea plant was brought to the country from China and was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya. Having originated in Kandy, tea plantations flourished to areas of Nuwara Eliya, Hatton, Haputale, Hantane and Bandarawela, thus rapidly increasing the production of tea even after Sri Lanka’s independence thereby making the country among the top tea producers in the world.
