Overview

When your cruise ship docks in the Guatemalan Caribbean, we will be ready to take you to an unforgettable experience visiting one of Guatemala's most important archaeological sites. We are talking about Quirigua and a Caribbean castle.

Only 2 hours away from the Port of Santo Tomás de Castilla, this beautiful archaeological complex belonging to an ancient Mayan civilisation is located. This city was occupied from 200 to 900 AD. and owns one of the most beautiful works of Mayan art. You will appreciate stelae, monuments, a Great Plaza, Acropolis, Ball Court, and more here.

One of the tallest Mayan stelae ever found was discovered in this city, and today we see it embodied in the Guatemalan 10-cent coin.

Then we will visit one of the most important locations in Guatemala´s Caribbean, The San Felipe Castle. Visit the inside of the castle and get to know its history.

The Archaeological Site of Quirigua will be waiting for us upon our arrival. Quirigua is a small city that belonged to the ancient Mayan Civilisation, located near the Motagua River, it allowed them to have a privileged place for maritime trade and communication with other Mayan cities such as Copán in Honduras. Today this city is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This city was occupied from 200 AD. And it is believed that it was by Mayans from the great City of Tikal. The construction of its acropolis began around the year 550 AD. Years later, Quirigua was subordinated to the City of Copan for control of trade routes. The magnificent architecture and its breathtaking monuments represent their greatest leaders. The most incredible thing is that they were made without the use of metal tools. You will learn these details and many more with our tour guide, an expert in archaeology and nature. Who will be happy to explain everything so that you do not leave with any doubts.
