Overview

Experience life behind the lines for the soldiers of the Great War. Much is told of the battles around Ypres or 'Wipers' as it was known, but little is told of this facet of the war. Not only is this tour a fascinating one, it also reminds us that these soldiers had lives away from the fighting, times which they were determined to cherish and make the most of after all, none of them knew if they would ever have the chance to come back again…

The main part of the tour, a visit to the iconic and beautiful Talbot House or Toc H. Formed during the war by the Rev Tubby Clayton Talbot House and Gardens quickly became a spiritual resting place for soldiers fresh from the horror of the trenches. All ranks were welcome here and all were equal, officers rubbing shoulders with the men. As Tubby Clayton said ' Abandon all rank all ye who enter here'. The house and gardens are preserved , its an incredible visit. The house and gardens are an ideal place for lunch which we take full advantage of. Its one of the few places locally that serves proper English Tea!
