This is a tour full of history and intrigue. As we explore the town we take in the famous Berkeley Castle, the home of vaccination at Dr Jenner's House, the iconic St Mary's church and the quaint town centre.
On this tour, we admire the stunning medieval Berkeley Castle from the south meadow. Berkeley Castle was built in 1153 by the Berkeley family who, 27 generations on, still live there today. Travel through time and history as we learn about the dungeon and the cell where Edward II is said to have been murdered. Discover the colourful Berkeley family, who were involved in many major events in England’s history; and find out which play William Shakespeare wrote for a Berkeley family wedding.
After the castle, we visit the iconic St Mary's Church, open the site of a 8th century Abbey. Parts of the present church are up to a thousand years old, and the nave and the font of the present building date from 1225. We also see where the famous Edward Jenner and the jester Dickie Pearce are buried.
Next we visit the site of Dr Jenner's House, where we learn about the world's first vaccination in 1796. From outside his home in Berkeley, your guide tells the storey of the pioneering Gloucestershire scientist Edward Jenner and his ongoing legacy: countless people around the world working together to promote life-saving vaccination.
Finally, we head to the town centre and learn about the town and the community through history.
