Around 15 km from Leh, Phyang Monastery is one of the only two monasteries in Ladakh belonging to the Drikung Kagyu sect, the other being the Lamayuru Monastery. Phyang has a 900-year-old museum with an extensive collection of idols, thangkas, scriptures, and Tibetan, Chinese and Mongolian weapons. The monastery complex also has a temple of Mahakal which was built around the same time as the monastery was built. The local woman guide take should through the monastery explaining its significance and cultural importance.
