What you can expect

Take the notion of stargazing from a hot tub up a notch and watch the Northern Lights from a thermal hot spring. Spend a night out at Chena Hot Springs Resort, touring the intriguing ice museum, luxuriating in balmy pools, and watching Alaska's best nighttime entertainment - the aurora borealis.

Get picked up from your hotel in Fairbanks and take in the scenery during the 60-mile (96-km) drive to the Chena Hot Springs Resort. Start your visit with a chilly tour of the Aurora Ice Museum. Grab a parka and head inside this cool facility, which was crafted using more than 1,000 tonnes of ice gathered from the property. Admire colourful ice crystal chandeliers, and snap photos of incredible sculptures by world champion ice carvers Steve and Heather Brice.

After your tour, put on your swimming costume and warm up with a soothing dip in the hot springs. Soak up the mineral-rich benefits of the naturally heated rock lake, relax in the warm indoor pools, or snag a seat in the outdoor hot tubs, taking a break to grab dinner at the resort's restaurant if you'd like. Once the sun goes down, find a spot on the property in one of the pools and watch the sky as the stars twinkle into being and the aurora borealis begins its colourful dance. After a few hours spent watching this luminous nighttime spectacle, hop back in the vehicle for the drive back to Fairbanks.
