Braga has its roots on the ancient Roman Empire. It's a bimillennial comercial city with strategic position serving the world's centre - Rome, back in I BC. Known as Bracara Augusta in honour of the Roman Emperor Augustus, keeps its importance and legacy very present on remains and structure of the city centre and surroundings.
Guimarães, by it's turn, is the cradle of nationality. It was the battleground of our independence from the kingdom of León, and the birthplace of Afonso Henriques (our first king). It is an enchanted city that maintains the original medieval structure and architectural features that earned the distinction as a cultural world heritage site by UNESCO (2001).
