What you can expect

Trek through Johnston Canyon and discover a winter nirvana of frozen waterfalls, giant ice pillars, and hidden ice caves. Led by charismatic and knowledgeable tour guides, the tour teaches you about the Canadian Rockies’ geology, history, and winter wildlife inhabitants.

Upon arrival, strap ice cleats over your boots for added support and grab a pair of adjustable hiking poles. Ascend along a network of steel catwalks and enjoy striking views of the Johnston Canyon and gorge below. Throughout the journey, learn about the area’s unique landscape and the history behind its formation.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife as you travel through Bow Valley Parkway, a known corridor to elk, bighorns, chipmunks, and more. Indulge in native legends, as well as local nature and wildlife trivia. The journey continues inside a natural, hidden ice cave with up-close views of the Lower Falls. The evening tour stops here, with time taken to marvel at the frozen falls by the light of your headlamp.

The daytime icewalks continue to the Upper Falls, where you may be lucky enough to see ice climbers scaling the frozen falls. After the 3.4-mile (5.4-km) hike, warm up with some hot chocolate and maple cookies.
