Newtonhill, formerly known as Skateraw, was once a thriving fishing community, it was home to a now-lost harbour, which was central to the village’s fishing industry until the late 19th century when it fell into disuse. A notable incident in the village’s past is Lady Isabella, a shipwreck that occurred off the coast of Newtonhill in 1858. The tragedy struck when the vessel ran aground, leading to the loss of many lives and becoming a poignant part of local lore. Today, Newtonhill is a quiet residential village, with traces of its fishing heritage still visible in the rugged coastline and the stories of its past.
